Kitchen countertop colors with matching stained cabinets

Building a new home and are stuck on a detail. We will have matching stained cabinets in all of kitchen including island. Can we mix our colors of countertops? Thinking a white on island and darker on perimeter. Does this work without having different cabinet colors?
