I'd stick with the more traditional ones, unless you also intend to replace all of your furniture and other design aspects from their more traditional look to something else that matches straight ones. The hall table wouldn't be the only item that required replacing.

I like plain spindles no matter style you have they just look better The hall table is not functional since it looks like a door would bang into it all the time I would just do a bigger piece of art and thats it and please take that giant clock off the wall.. I will say the change in spindles will be expensive and that decision really should have been made before the first coat of stain so I guess you need to figure how much it is worth to change spindles at this point.

I would suggest a dark metal balustrade (railing and balusters). That should be a nice update to your home.

Thanks everyone for your comments. Interesting that everyone here has a different opinion on the spindles. Renovations are stressful!

Patricia Colwell - Thanks for your comment about the hallway table. I never thought about removing the table. We have a lot of doors in our hallway - to the dining room on one side, to the kitchen/living room, to the master bedroom and to the garage.
