Is GE’s “matte black” and “black slate” the same black?

I have a GE cafe series fridge in black slate and my dishwasher broke. They no longer have black slate in cafe series, it’s now called matte black. I’ve read online that it’s the same with only a new name and I’ve also read it’s different colors.

I’ve called GE cafe customer service and have been told the slate is grayish and the matte black is the traditional black color but no shine.... another call to cafe CS and I was told they are the exact same thing, “specially since the touch up paint for matte black is black slate”.

I don’t know what to think now, no stores here locally have any black GE examples in showroom. Hoping someone knows, I’d hate to have two different looking blacks in my kitchen

Can GE send you a color swatch?

No. Not the same. One is GE research based and the other is Haier and not at all the same color. Which is yet another reason to avoid the fad of the moment manufacturer specific colors that leave you scrambling to match things when they are discontinued. Do real stainless. And never worry about matching, or the color scratching off.

thank you for the reply. one thing I did do last night was look For parts on a cafe model that was labeled as matte black. if you look at the replacement skin on say the freezer, it mentions it’s black slate in the description, see picture.

Agreed, if you want your kitchen to look nice even going forward when appliances gradually get replaced, you should pick stainless, custom panels, or pay for a premium brand that can color-match any color that you give them.

A key distinction here is that GE Profile has slate and black slate, 2 different colors. The slate is gray, but the black slate is black. The Cafe series has black matte, which I too would be interested in seeing a side by side comparison with the GE Profile black slate. I disagree that sticking with stainless steel ensures the same color across time. The different stainless steel finishes can vary and now the touchproof SS is super shiny and looks plastic.

I HAVE the black slate, and assure you it is NOT black black.. it's like a dark gunmetal gray. And yes I'm sure it's black slate and not slate. I wasn't able to see one in person before I ordered and I'm actually disappointed but it's too pricey of a purchase with ridiculous far out delivery times so I'm gonna suck it up. I couldn't afford the 'Cafe' stuff--if it is actually a true black, so I will likely end up painting the new fridge along with the rest of my stainless appliances that I hate.

But in your opinion is it more of a dark gunmetal gray than black? Because it is to me, curious for other's opinions who actually have it in their

Yes, i honestly would lean more towards dark gunmetal gray than black. I rememeber being a little disappointed when they arrived. i was picturing in my head a dark flat black, its not. now my units are 18 months old now. it may have changed

I'm putting in matte black cupboards so I've really been looking to match them. GE's Black Slate is more Deep Matte Charcoal. But GE Cafe series black is the same as GE's matte black and even just "black." I was looking at a dishwasher in "black" and asked the chat person if it was flat black? Yes it is. Can get GE's Profile series in matte black still. I'm taking another in-person shopping whirl with a sample of my cupboards to be safe. Black can vary a LOT. Black stainless looks like metal, not as polished, but dark--very pretty. If I can't totally match the matte black to my cupboards, I'll go that direction.

I got 2 cafe matte black appliances in June 2021 and i agree with the post above that they are more gunmetal gray than a true matte black.

@HU-252185418 What microwave is that? It looks like it matches pretty good.

@Donica Stilwell i just got mine today and sent them all back!! I ordered all the Cafe matte black pd the xtra money for cafe cuz i didnt want the GE black slate cuz i didnt want the gunmetal grey. got them today and it was gunmetal grey and sparkly!! not black or matte..very disappointed!

I just got my refrigerator and dishwasher and we ordered the Matte Black because it was supposed to be black, it is not!! my wife is an interior designer and is livid at the fact that the color is really gunsmoke gray!!! Many people think this is just a marketing gimmick to force people with true black appliances to be forced into moving everything to the same crappy gray, only to be forced to move to another color in the future.. I am so disappointed with GE and the rest of the appliance vendors at this point!!!

We ordered a Cafe matte black refrigerator, and paid extra for the champagne gold handles.. it was delivered and on the side of the box it said "black slate"... We immediately sent it back bc it's definitely not matte black like everyone has stated above.. Lowes told us the sku#'s or whatever didn't match, and that the warehouse must've messed up.. and they ordered the matte black again for us. And again it came in saying black slate and was shiny gunmetal grey. Sent it back and now we're trying to figure out what to do... Don't call something "matte" or even "black" if it's truly not. So annoying.

Yup, its all the same. not sure if you saw my above post but i ended up getting a GE profile stove which was black slate and it perfectly matched my matte black dishwasher and fridge

Yeah.. I read that.. and I wish I could be okay with the black slate.. but I just can't 😣. Mainly because the fridge is going on a wall that has all matte black cabinets.. and the black slate Cafe fridge stuck out like a sore thumb. Really not sure what we'll do at this point.. We've considered buying a cheaper fridge and having it painted or wrapped.

The photo is terrible.. There's a piece of wood between the upper and lower (that didn't get shipped in time) so we painted it just to see what the full black wall of cabinets would look like.

Also need to line up all the doors etc..

Having the same issue. Ours sat in our garage, untouched for almost a year. Contractor went to install and it is crushed. GE is a nightmare. Customer service is so confused as to what is slate, stainless and/or matte black. Moral of story is to unpack your appliance upon arrival.
