Window Replacement Quotes - Need advice!

last modified: 6 years ago

Hi all. I recently received 3 quotes for replacement windows for my Kentucky home. I have 14 windows (9 double-hung, 3 half-rounds, and 2 transom) in my 15 year old house. I have received the following quotes thus far...

Renewal by Andersen - $19750

Pella Impervia - $18300 (was not impressed by this product)

Marvin Infinity - $13300

Gilkey Premium Vinyl - $10300

The Gilkey and Marvin are sold by the same local business. The Gilkey window is a local brand sold in KY, OH, and IL. I really like the RBA, but not the price. I'm leaning toward the Marvin Infinity at the moment, but I'm interested in what others think. What should I do? I have read so much info and heard so many sales pitches that my head is spinning. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks...

Thanks for the reply. My current windows are builder grade vinyl windows. I'm starting to have water penetration issues and various other issues with them. Besides the cringey sales pitch, the RBA look like a great window but they seem overpriced. I would say I like the Marvin just as much, but then I read on here about the Infinity having less than ideal air infiltration ratings. So, you would say going with the Infinity would be a solid choice? Does that price looks reasonable?

Where are you having water infiltration issues? You need to make sure that your contractor has a prescriptive approach to this to fix the issue. If the window leaks are showing at the window heads, you are looking at removing siding and addressing this leak at the wall to window connection.

Agree, the pella is not well made and rather cheap looking.

The water is coming in around the glass on one window and at the bottom corner of another. The later window doesn't close properly and you can see that it's not level. There is not a tight seal at the bottom when the window closes. With that said, I'm going to have a discussion with the contractor about the installation procedure, specifically how they will be flashing the windows on the sides of the house with vinyl siding. About the Pella Impervia, that thing looked horrible. The one on the showroom floor actually didn't even close properly at the top. Not impressed at all by the look. Who wants to see the fibers in the fiberglass?

Thanks for the replies. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

If the like the contractor that gave you the two quotes, those seem like fine options. I have never used the Gilkey product so I can't comment with any real world observations on it.

Yeah - if you like that contractor and you like the Andersen windows - why not see if they will install them? Or get a quote from another contractor (not RBA) that uses Andersen?

If you are moving on from Marvin due to the less than stellar air leakage rating, I'm not sure that the RBA double hung offers a huge improvement there, nor do your other choices if I'm not mistaken. If this is an area that you are focusing on (for good reason IMO), you may want to look at some additional options. Higher end vinyl windows will generally have excellent ratings in this area (among others), and probably come in at a better price as well. Appearance is the downside to vinyl, however 1) I've not heard many call the Impervia beautiful, and 2) it sounds like the appearance is not a deal breaker for you given that you have a vinyl window under current consideration.
