Small Square Kitchen Needs New Flooring

I'd love some advice about tiling a small kitchen in a cute little house. The kitchen is black and white (large white appliances, small black appliances on counter tops which are speckled black, gray, and white granite). Cabinets/drawers are white with black handles. Wall tile is white subway. One wall has gray/black/white wallpaper in a geometric ginger jar design. I kind of like the black and white checkerboard look for the floor, would be open to other ideas. I do not have a huge budget for this, and am not interested in fancy designs, but would be open to other tiling ideas. Thanks for any ideas!

Add value for not too great investment and you and a friend can D I Y : Basic pre finished hardwood floor. Tile: a slate type (gray can go light or medium w some tonality )....if you must tile

Pictures would help. As well as a loose definition of "not a huge budget". One person's not a huge budget is $1,000, while another's is $10,000....

I uploaded two photos, not sure why the other one has not shown up, but this will give you some idea of the color scheme. Currently a rundown hardwood floor is in place....I do not want to replace or refinish. I'd like tile!

My budget would be under 1,000 dollars....This is NOT a huge kitchen, just a little square one about 10x10 or so. Thanks....

OK...here we go. Cost to do a buff and coat of the hardwoods = $3-$4 per square foot. You can choose to have the kitchen done alone which probably knocks the price up to $5/sf.

You have roughly 100sf of space to deal with. So: $5/sf x 100 = $500

Now for tile:

1. Remove Hardwood = $2/sf =$200

2. Purchase low-priced tile = $2/sf = $200

3. Subfloor preparation = $2 - $5/sf = $200 (up to $500)

4. Installation labour for tile = $10/sf = $1000

5. Cost of other materials for tile = $2-$3/sf = $200 - $300

Total Tile Costs = $1,800 - $2,100

What are the floors in the rest of the house?

I like it when SJ says - ‘OK here we go’ I can see teachers hat being put on :). I agree with all that SJ said - an economical new floor is more about floor demo and prep than the actual ‘new floor’. You may want tile but it is the most expensive route - even with a budget tile.

Save your $$ and keep the lovely old wood, it gives warmth to the space.

This wood is not so lovely. Was refinished several years ago and still does not look good. Rest of house is very nice wood but kitchen floor gets such wear and tear!

Labor prices depend of where you live. Without any indication, it is impossible to give you a meaninful answer. I would find a couple contractors and ask them.

I live in Southwest Virginia.

I did not ask for anything more meaningful than some ideas for a small kitchen's flooring, with a preference for tile; probably should not have mentioned budget at all....
