Need Idea to "pretty up" kitchen wall.

Hi!

Wanted to get some advise on our kitchen wall. This will be a rental home in a year or so but we are looking for some small updates for the remaining time we are here and that renters could use/like.

We replaced countertops but didn't gut kitchen. This is a wall that is seen from our living area and I'm looking for ideas on how to make it "prettier".

I was thinking maybe to paint it a darker color? add some gold wine wall mounts and get rid of what we currently have there? I am a little concerned with a darker color against the brown cabinets.

I'm open to any ideas! Light fixture is also changing and that's why it's circled.

Rather than many small objects, I would put a larger painting/poster on the wall. It could be something related to food or not, depending on your tastes. May be change what is on the wall on the living room or, if it is something you really care about (hard to see on this picture, it is too small), make a better collage so that it takes more space (Sorry, I just noticed you are going to rent, so you may not care about the living room at this point). If you want something that a renter could use, put more substantial sheves that you can style as you like and that a renter can eventually use to store their plates and glasses or something else (It is hard to see if you have a lot of storage).

I would not paint in a darker color, particularly if it is going to become a rental. I have been living in rentals for several years and hated when people painted with strong colors. I did not necessarily change what I had for it to fit the walls, so a good neutral is better.

I think the paint color isn’t working for me - it’s a bit brown for me - but I wouldn’t paint that wall unless you paint all the walls. I agree with lg - one large piece of wall art is the way to go. And go with a color that stands out against the other colors of the room. Maybe light blues and reals...

Agree, would change the multiole small things to one large piece of art.

Would repaint, probably a shade of green to complement cabinets & floor.

Does the kitchen have enough storage? If not try a free standing unit for additional storage.

Like the current wall color -- suits the room.

Not a fan of those open shelves.

Since heat rises, I'd not want wine stored in an open rack or shelf high on a wall or any place where it might be in sunlight.

You'd be better served with a shallow cabinet appropriate for what you want to store.

You might choose a corner cabinet and keep your wine glasses in the upper part but you should probably keep the wine in the bottom of the cabinet, preferably locked away from any curious children.

I agree with Cathy and Suez. A nice, free-standing cabinet or shelf unit would be nice. Seems like most people always need more space for their stuff. I also would enjoy some greenery above the wall cabinet. I know that's an old style, but to me, a bit of nature always looks great.

Be aware that anything on that wall will have part of the chandelier hanging in front of it unless the chandelier is hung higher.

I don't vote for shelves: there are several visual changes with white door, black frig [contrasting with], and white counter... to me shelves in their way busy up the room. Also ceiling angles.

Another vote for a large colorful piece of canvas art such as the fall season canvas suggested by Everdebz. A rule of thumb that’s been helpful is to shoot for filling about 65% of the wall width. I like the website GreatBigCanvas.com.

Neutral walls work best when you show a place. Lighting: I truly believe that a kitchen can never have to much lighting, however, make sure it's on dimmers so you can change the atmosphere of the space. Another way to create atmosphere (for the living room area - and to separate it visually from the kitchen) is to have a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. I agree with removing all the little items on the walls. The fewer items you have on the walls allows renters to see the place as their own. Lighting is often an afterthought when people think about interior design, but it actually makes a great deal of difference.

40 years experience here owning rental properties, and of several price points as well. We've had bad ones, mediocre ones, and great ones, and I'll tell you the truth, I can't see any benefit by either painting, changing your light fixture, or placing anything different on the wall near your kitchen table.

Not saying this is your motive either, but you also won't get additional monthly rent if you do any of those things. In fact, you may even get frustration. Trust me, we've had people remove the nicest things I left behind with my best intentions for them.
