I prefer the greater self control of non-watering pots. Pots don't know if you raise the thermostat (or it gets colder outside). Others will disagree.

I think Yolanda pointed in a right direction. Windowsill in winter - you probably need to keep the plants on the drier side - cold and wet - is not good. I have a friend who lives in te mountains - and when it gets cold - she moves all her wicked plants to bottom watering - and back to wicks comes spring.

Regarding the double ceramic self watering pots - just water sparingly from the top in winter. ( Double ceramic pots - YUCK- they kill more plants than all bugs together, IMHO)

All my violets are in Oyama pots- a form of self watering pots- and they are window sill grown. Well, actually on bakers racks in my sunroom. They all do very well, no matter what the season.

This particular plant was doing great. Nothing changed in the location or lighting but it has started to die. It’s frustrating.

Well, since we have no idea where you are in the wide world, we can't really guess. But with winter in the northern hemisphere, southern windows have higher light levels, all other windows less generally. All windows are likely colder. So things change, even if you don't change them.

I have them under growing lights. They are not in the window.

Hi All, even in the States there can be a great difference between the winters in LA and the winters in Buffalo. Toronto does not get as much snow as Buffalo does, and we are about a 100 miles north. It is what it is, and we have to grow AVs under our own conditions.

Julie, maybe A photo would help us determine why your av isn’t doing well.

Even the best healthiest and perfectly cared for AV can die in a day or 7 from soil born root infection - depending on the infection. If you see that it is in distress - remove the crown and reroot it making sure that all the rotten tissue is cut off. May be you will be abe to save only a couple leaves - again cut them to the point where the leaf stalk is healthy. It happens, you just say a couple of curse words and continue growing.

Oyama brand or style pots seem to be the best type to use. Other self-watering pots can lose their porosity and cause the roots die because they are not getting hydration. Joanne
