Which is Positive/Negative/Ground on Extension Cord

Please help me to know which wire is which on this cord. If there is no way without a meter, how do i use the meter to tell? Thank you!

There is no positive and negative with AC. You're probably thinking of hot and neutral.

The neutral conductor will normally be the ribbed one. Usually the one opposite is hot. The one in the middle is usually ground. Actually, I don't think I've seen ground anywhere but the middle conductor with these flat 3-conductor zip cords.

If the plug or receptacle is still attached, you can verify these with a simple battery operated light tester or the continuity/resistance function on a DMM (available for a few bucks from the cheap tools place). The wider blade/slot is neutral, the narrower blade/slot is hot, and the round pin/hole is ground.
