No color changers for me. I’m with Karen, had no idea Teddy Bears Picnic changed like that. The brownish color never appealed to me, but it’s really nice later in the day.

No color changers for me either--unless I can count the ones that begin so lovely in the morning and turn to ugly, yucky colors in the afternoon...but, no, I don't think that is what you mean by this category!!!! :)

I think I like the morning color although I'm sure even that can be changeable depending on the temperature.............Karen: Your seedling is neat too. I used to have Priscilla's Dream but I gave it away. It was pale purple in the AM [not very pretty] but by evening it was a very nice, rich purple. The hotter the better. Very unusual. No other ones.

Teddy Bear's Picnic does change a lot during the day. I seem tohave taken all my photos in the morning so can't show the difference. I have Pigment of Imagination, I know I had a morning picture, this "may" be it because it is not titled

about lunch time. Not a very good angle on it

This was its first bloom year. It seemed to melt by early afternoon and looked pretty bad by late afternoon. I may try moving it. There is a stage I quite like the looks of it, quite blue gray, but it changes fast.

Nancy: That's a pretty honest assessment of Teddy Bear's Picnic. I too find the grayed coloring the most interesting but if it only lasts briefly then not up my DAYlily alley......Still I love seeing others pictures of it..............Maryl

I wondered about the substance of Pigment iof Imagination because of the fading. Nancy, it will be interesting to see how it reacts if you move it.

This type of daylily is definitely the kind I like. I grow both of those two daylilies mentioned above . Pigment didn't bloom this past season ...Too dry I guess . This image is from a previous season.

I also grow Joseph's Coat another color changer Depends on the weather what color this plants shows.

A couple of other color changers in my gardens include Trahlyta and it seems most of Trahlyta's children carry the color changing trait .

So exciting to see Pigment of Imagination posted on here. Thanks Nancy and Signet. I will be planting it next spring. I am looking forward to see its color change in my garden. Nancy, do you recommend it be planted in a shadier place to preserve its substance a little longer? Does yours melt by the afternoon, Signet? Starman's Quest definitely passes its changing color onto its offspring sometime. Your Upgrade and Milk Chocolate are very nice, Signet.

Karen , my POI is in full sun ( actually in an extra bed out past the back yard gate ) I have meant to move it two years in a row but never got to it . Anyway the garden it is in has no protection from the snow, wind or sun . It does just fine and believe me the winter winds here just howl being surrounded by farm fields.. I have not experienced the "melting" that everyone has talked about .What I can tell you is that when POI opens in the morning it looks nothing like the image I posted above . I think I have said this before but when I originally saw it bloom I thought I had the wrong plant . The color change to what you see in the image above happens by mid to late morning here . This happens to every bloom every day no matter weather or temps unlike some others that require changes in the weather or temps to do their magic show.act.

I can't say whether shade will help or not, but the edges on mine definitely roll up and much of the bloom looks wilted. It is on the south side and gets all day sun. This was the 1st year for it, so maybe it will improve this year. The plant itself seems very vigorous.

I didn't know if we would have many for this category. It's interesting to see what came up. Personally I don't care for color changers.

Just an FYI from my garden. Upgrade doesn’t change color for me during the day. A cooler day will bring out the spots.

Oh I meant to mention I love your seedling Karen ! I am always amazed at the strength of the Trahlyta genes . It seems to come through as the major factor in many many crosses.

I think that is one of the reasons daylilies are so popular Debra. There is something for everyone's taste. I personally love the color changers ......its like getting double the daylily for your money and the garden is NEVER static . LOL !

Yup Debra , I am only now starting to collect bagel varieties ( more rounded ) as I started out with spiders and uf's and only recently added some doubles . I tried a couple just to see as I did not like the looks of them in pictures. Now they are growing on me ( literally and figuratively LOL ) I still haven't got many toothy ones or any with chicken fat I dont think . I Hope I live long enough to get some of those. LOL although my first love will always be UF's .

It is neat to see all of your color changers. I don't have any pictures to show but we added Pigment of Imagination last season. When it blooms next year, I want to take a series of pictures to document the changes it goes through. I have seen it in person, but never in the early morning hours. I would like to take a photo every hour (if I can find the time).

On these color changers, what influences the color change? The temperature, time of day or just breeding? I'll be interested in Nan's picture experiment where hour by hour the color is recorded. I'd like to know if it changes from day to day, depending on outside influences.............Maryl
