I have Atmore Lamarque, which is a wonderful plant. For me it is growing a multistem naturalistic arching shape like my MAC does. I only have bush Devoniensis which is also wonderful, but I hear the climbing version is a wonder and very aggressive in a good way. I think it may climb more than AL does so far here. I think Jeri might have a huge Atmore Lamarque that buries a house vs a discrete climber style if you know what I mean. I think they both have great health and fragrance.

I have Devoniensis CL. It is about 16 ft up and around a trellis but does get cut back a little in the early spring/late winter. It used to flower a lot more than it does now.

The reason, is due to some very tall Oaks that are increasingly shading it. I don't know how much it would flower directly under a tree. If it could grow up through and out the top it might flower more. Being a tea, it isnt super fragrant but I can smell it if I can reach any of the lower blooms to put my nose into lol. It stays pretty healthy here.

It is a GIANT maple but with the way it’s situated it would get pretty decent sun, at least what qualifies for decent sun at my house :)

The Atmore family's clone of 'Lamarque' has been in that family since the mid-1800's, and thus is almost-certainly virus-free. I doubt if there are any virus-free clones of Cl. Devoniensis.

I have both. Still young, so I cannot speak too much to mature growth. I love them both, but I think I favor D. a bit more, due to the flower scent. My Cl. D. is very fragrant, reminding me of damask, and tends toward a blush tint on luminous cream. The foliage is dark green, and it’s a bit slower than my other climbers. It’s well-thorned, which would probably help it climb.

Atmore has a lighter green foliage, and the blossoms have a light, almost citrus scent and the color is more cream to pale yellow. It’s lanky, so probably easy to train when young, and pretty vigorous, seeming to grow a bit faster than D. :-)

It seems like they are both excellent choices with the nod goong to cl devoniensis for fragrance so that is what I shall get!

Atmore Lamarque has been virus tested. It IS clean. And, at least to MY nose, Lamarque has SCENT. It's strong, sweet with elements of lemon zest. love Devoniensis but I can't smell it.

Awww, crap! Maybe I should get both. Fragrance is super important to me. Can either of them take more shade than the other? I have another giant tree it could grow up but this one isn’t positioned as well

Because Lamarque is descended from Moschata, I would think it might accept more shade. Add that its petals are smaller than Devoniensis', which permits them to open with less heat and be less affected by liquid water and i would think Lamarque would tolerate less light better. Go back to this thread about Lamarque and scroll down to my photos of the Spreckeles' Lamarque growing through the trees in Aptos, CA. Does that appear to demand great sun?
