Avoid Liebherr Monolith Freezer if you want ice

The Monoliths are gorgeous inside, keeps things very cold and is the most affordable of built-ins. We love the fridge even though water is inexplicably lukewarm and both units are very hard to open for the lighter members of the family.

But there are major design flaws in this first generation Monolith freezer's icemaker. If ice, or your time are important to you, I suggest you look elsewhere or wait until they have a year or two to work out kinks.

I'll try to be concise with most salient facts (believe me, it is a far longer story involving countless hours of emails, phone calls and 2-week long waits for each service call).

- Freezer installed end of July. Icemaker wasn't working from day one. After several unsuccessful visits I correctly diagnosed that the arm that senses a full ice bin would not reset. So while waiting another 2 weeks for a service visit I tied weights to it - it made ice, but then of course wouldn't stop until we used the touchscreen settings to turn it all the way off.

- Multiple visits by 2 repair companies as well as install team from local store (Albert Lee here in Bellevue, WA). The most expert repairman still needed to wait for a factory rep to walk through procedures on the phone. "Repairs" require arcane digital codes using a touchscreen that is very hard to use when frozen!

- A new icemaker was ordered... a wait... then schedule install...it functioned exactly like the old one.

- A new, redesigned icemaker was ordered... a wait... Install failed as freezer didn't recognize the new icemaker. So they REPLACED THE ENTIRE FREEZER leaving me to deal with reinstalling the toekick. It would work for a while but then turn itself off digitally. We'd reset using touchscreen and it would work ok for a while longer (many days at a time). I was willing to live with this inconvenience but then...

- It clogged. Ice got stuck and wouldn't eject. I cleared it but, being so "smart", there was now an error code that required yet another technician. Another wait...

- Tech they sent explained that default water amount (L5) was too much - cubes too big (they were still below average compared to our old LG, but whatever). More cussing at digital touchscreen by tech and now it's set to L2. Tech leaves.

- Later same day alarms go off, freezer acting as if it doesn't have water. Long wait to talk to Liebherr who finally says they'll need to send someone again - for the 7th time. With no explanation of how this time will be any different.

So we're yet again buying bags of ice at the grocery store to put in our $6K built-in "smart" freezer. Oh yeah, never could get the Wifi feature to work (gimmicky to begin with but at least hoped it would provide alternative to frozen touchscreen.)

I could go on but you get the idea.
