Entry Help - light and finishing

last modified: 6 years ago

We have lived in our new house for a little over a year and still haven't found a fixture for this spot. The cover panel for the wiring is centred on the door but, as you can see in the image, not centred on the space.

There are only pot lights on the entry level but the one that is missing was slated to be a semi-flush mount something...something we never chose because we couldn't make a decision!

Also wondering if we should be putting other "things" up in the door area. I have no idea what but now that I see the photo it sure looks empty! Would be totally fine getting something different for dog towels but they do need to be within reach easily by the door.

We also have a bench currently across from our entry closet but it isn't what we want long term just what is there. I have a large painting that normally goes there but is replaced temporarily for December. That said I'm open to ideas on what should go in this spot too. The kids do use the bench to sit on and put shoes on. I had originally thought a table would be better than bench as would be better for height.

The rest of the home is fairly clean lines, open concept, modern sort of...

Any suggestions?

Anyone??? Would love help! Sorry for sideways photos. Here there are properly.

for the light, what you could try is one with a large canopy or one that is flush,,,like this

you could fudge the install and move it over to the right of the hole

Thanks Beth. The Sputnik type one is possible but the others don’t fit the style at all. We are wondering if something that looks off centre is needed so it fills the space more irrelevant to door etc.

I didn't mean that exact style, just showing you the completely covered canopy that will allow you to move the light over the hole.

Do you think it would look weird that the light wasn’t centred on door though? I wish we just had pot lights here to be honest!

that's why i'm saying go w/a covered flush mount. you could adjust it so that you could move off the hole and center it on the doorway

you could always patch the hole and make another one that's centered!

The spot for the light IS centred on the door. It is not centred in the space. The door is off set to the left a bit.

You could also have a light made for the space with the canopy off-center (photo for reference but not necessarily in this style).

    RSW very cool idea!!!!

Love the plant idea. There was one there originally actually and we moved it. Gives me something to think about. The rug that is there looks far more lively in person than it does in this picture. I think we need to just pick a fixture and go with it.

Please add a larger rug for that adorable golden! Clearly it likes to hang out in that spot and as it ages, will need a rug to make it easier to get up.

Ha ha Lidia she was only there because I was! She has a large cozy bed by the fire she spends most of her time in and she’s only four years old. She’s just fine with the rug that’s there and so are we

I would also add a much larger rug...

Paint that door a dark gray/green or? and a bigger rug. The green rug Beth shows is a drop dead gorgeous color. A large lidded basket to stash the towels in that doesn't look like a laundry basket. A good sized plant. Something alive. Your little bench is fine. It sounds like it's working for your little ones so why change it?

No way we are painting the door! House is primarily grey in/out so white is perfect for the door. I understand people want me to get a new rug but we bought that rug for the space and actually really like it. I’m all for a new basket for dog towels and a plant on the other side. Yes the bench is working, kids not really all that little, but it doesn’t go with rest of house. Oh well likely low on list of to do’s

So if you get a fixture with a large enough mounting plate as suggested you can center it to the door if you like, sounds like you are happy with most of what you have in the space so i could see a coat rack or a plant and some artwork that brings the attention to eye level.

The spot for the light is centred on the door. That’s not the issue. We were worried it would look weird centred on door not on the entry itself.

But yes overall we are happy with the entry and like the idea of a plant. A coat rack can’t really go there as it’s awkward to get to with the swing of the door.

Still no light and this plant won’t survive in the spot but it does confirm that a plant would look great here.

We are thinking asymmetrical Sputnik style. Just need to actually choose one!
