Without knowing your kitchen dimensions from just what I see I’m not certain that there is enough room to add an island that would accommodate seating around it. If you measure the width of the floor from the fridge to the sink and subtract ay least 72” (the minimum of 36” clearance on both sides of the island) the remaining number would be how wide your island could be.
If the short wall on the right side of the end of the cabinets can come out you could extend the counter to almost to the door trim and add a peninsula. If your door is a slider you could also consider changing it to a single swing door and then you could extend the cabinets further into the current seating area. I sketched a mock. Again I would put a minimum of 36” should be left at the end of a peninsula and the pantry for good traffic flow and “42 would be better since there is often more than one cook in the kitchen.

Agree with others. Maybe compromise and get a new counter height table. Feel of an island but still a table.

You don’t have room for an island, particularly an island with seating. A breakfast table just outside the kitchen is convenient for family meals, and if a guest wants to visit while you are in the kitchen, he/she will have a place to sit out of your work area and out of your way. As for the height of the table, sitting at a standard table with your feet on the floor is more comfortable than sitting on a stool at a raised counter.

What do you see as an improvement to the table by making it an “island”?

Kim, can you clarify what you want? Do you want an island *in* the kitchen space, between the fridge and cabinets? Or do you mean you want an island where the table currently is?

While it doesn’t appear as though you have the right space for an island (without making major structural changes, anyway), it does look like a peninsula could be a viable alternative.
