Has Samsung fixed their ice maker issues?

Hi,

I'm currently looking at the Samsung RF28K9070SR because I really like the 4 door design and feel the freezer will be much more organized than a traditional french door. My husband really wants in door ice and water. I've heard from a few appliance stores that Samsung has fixed the ice maker problems in recent years so they are better than they were. Does anyone own a recent Samsung fridge and can you comment? I'm going to get an extended 5 yr warranty but obviously don't want to buy something where I'm guaranteed to have issues.

We have Samsung RF28HMEDBSR/AA which was in this house 4 years when we bought. It's without question the WORST refrigerator we have ever had. The ice maker dispenser releases cubed AND crushed no matter what setting it's on. EVERY morning we have to remove the left crisper drawer to mop up all the water with a kitchen towel. It leaks from the ice maker and is supposedly a built in defrost issue. Not engineered correctly. Lastly, my husband has to defrost the ice maker with a hair dryer once a month. There are 30 pages of complaints about this on the Samsung site and a class action lawsuit. I'm currently looking for a new one to replace this with.

Suzanne....tried turning off the energy saver but unfortunately, still had standing water under the left crisper drawer. Thank you for the suggestion!

I’m so sorry it didn’t work for you. I thought it was such an odd thing to happen because I didn’t have a water dispenser inside the door and the freezer was on the bottom below the crisper. I couldn’t figure out where that water could possibly be coming from. At that time, Samsung actually had the problem listed on their webpage as one of the most common problems. My repair guy did replace a part, but then told me to keep the energy saver off. it must have been a small piece because it took only a few minutes and he didn’t charge anything. I would give Samsung a call and see if they had a recall on a part.

I have a 3 year old Samsung. I also purchased the 5 year warranty. They fixed my ice maker a month ago. No further problems. I really like the four doors. I think buying the 5 year warranty is the best thing.

Our Samsung is just over two years old and the ice maker constantly freezes and prevents the ice making. We bought the 5 year extended warranty through Lowes. Had a repair guy out a year ago and he said he found an electrical connection in the ice maker that was loose. Well, that didn't fix it. It made ice for a couple months then started freezing up again. So, I used a hair dryer on the thing, and it would work for a couple weeks or so. Called Lowes Protection Service AGAIN, after one year, and they scheduled a repair that was 4 weeks out. The repair guy showed up, took a look and said he would order a new ice maker. 3 weeks later he installed it. Made ice for ONE WEEK, and froze up again.

Called Lowes again and am now two weeks out for the guy to show again.

This refrigerator and Lowes Protection Plan both stink. I'm going to wait out our 5 year warranty then put the thing out by the road with a big sign regarding Samsung and Lowes, and the wording won't be pretty

Same horror story. Replaced ice maker after 4 years for $360. then 2 years later same problem. Freezing up. I used everything but a blow torch to defrost only to have it freeze up 2 months after. Piece of junk fridge!!!

In doing some recent research on replacing my LG refrigerator, I found reliable statistics that the majority of refrigerator repairs are related to the ice makers regardless of the manufacturer. This was of the most common mid-range models such as yours and mind. So either younlive without an ice maker or take your chances it seems.

Don't understand all the recent issues with ice makers. When I purchased a new townhouse in 1983 it came with Fridgidaire appliance and refrigerator had ice maker. Only problem ever with this refrig was the fan in the freezer needed replacing. Lived there for 23 years with no ice maker issues. When I built my current house in 2007 I installed a Maytag french door regrfrig. Constant issues yearly with ice maker. Also had the compressor die. 3 years ago I decided to replace this frig prior to next ice maker issue. I went with the LG french door and have had no issues in the 3 years with anything. When investigating what to purchase I read somewhere(not sure if true) there are really only 2 refrig makers currently - Samsung and LG. You can tell which by looking at where the ice maker is located(body of refrig or door). GE, Whirlpool, Kitchenaid etc are all made by these companies to specs defined by the made by the company that applies their label. My LG was ordered from a factory in Alabama so American made, and delivered directly. Purchased through Costco.

I don't think the physical structure of the ice maker mechanism in a refrigerator/freezer has any relation to the freezing-up of anything. The ice maker is chilled (and the water in the mold frozen) by the cooling system of the whole unit (compressor, evaporator/cooling coil, condensor coil), it (the ice maker) doesn't itself cool or freeze anything.

The only issue I’ve had with our Samsung water/ice dispenser from 2018 is it puts out crushed ice even though cubed os selected. I guess it’s better then the other issues I’m reading about

I have a Samsung Quad fridge with the ice and water in the door, I had issues with the ice maker freezing up, the first time Samsung came out they replace the Ice Maker under warranty which did not fix the problem. Six months later they came back out and replaced the ice maker and a couple of logic boards, for the last year it has been working without any issues

Our rental house has a Samsung fridge that does not produce ice. It is fairly new.

We have friends that have a Samsung fridge that is also fairly new, and theirs' will occasionally stop producing ice for a few weeks, then produce ice constantly for a few weeks. The ice tray overflows if not emptied on a daily basis.

I have a former coworker that needed his entire fridge replaced after 2 years because of the water supply and ice maker issues. Ironically, the new fridge is doing the same after less than a year.

Do you see the trend here?

I wound up getting the new quad door Cafe and love it! Glad I was able to avoid Samsung. One benefit of covid delays I guess since that fridge wasn’t available when I was supposed to start my Reno!

I have not been able to get my Samsung fixed!

I've had issues with my Samsung fridge as well. The ice maker wasn't working properly and after doing research I found some common issues such as the circuit breaker being tripped or a blown fuse. I called Instant Appliance Repair for my Ice Machine repair and the issue ended up being the water line not being properly secured to the ice maker. I highly recommend Nate Iminov he fixed my ice machine in less than an hour!

    @Jesus Molina,

Circuit breakers and fuses are unlikely to be the cause of a refrigerator's ice maker malfunction. There isn't a breaker or fuse specifically for the ice maker. The breaker or fuse is on the electrical circuit that runs the entire refrigerator ... the whole thing would be non-functional if a breaker tripped or fuse blew.

The servicer you're touting can't help people in this discussion who are located in Pennsylvania and other states and cities far outside their business area.

Our ice maker has been repaired twice and replaced 3 times! Don’t get me started their dryer! Never ever buy Samsung!

Had Samsung 4epair out 4 times in 5 years. Last week told this couldn't be repaired and Samsung would give me 50% off on a new one. Why go back to Samsung if they have so many problems? Model RF28JBEDBSG/AA Purchase in 2017, delivered and installed mid 2018

we bought the beautiful 4 door refrigerator in 2015 and it worked fine for 2 years - then the icemaker stopped. We paid $350 to replace it. I guess the law suit hadn't happend yet. a year later it did it again, and they sent someone that said they would cover it this time. It worked for a couple more years fine, but then last October it froze up. when I say "froze up" it is a large ice cycle in the back of the icemaker and a lot of frozen water on the bottom of the metal part of the icemaker. If you turn off the breaker for 3 hours, you can chip it away - and wipe it out, and it will work for another couple of months. Anyway - we called, and they sent someone for free to "fix" it a 3rd time. then in January - again for free a 4th time - now it is April 1st and they are sending someone again for free - "we are so sorry for the inconvenience" - and this time they say they "might" replace the whole icemaker. But I have no expectation of it being fixed. It isn't hard to thaw and chip it clean. It's just the principle - who wants to do that every 2 months. One time I turned it off for 2 hours and turned it back on (at the breaker) and that must have thawed it out enough to work. It has been about 8 times total in 8 years that we have had to deal with it. We moved it 3 times - so that thawed it out some too. I keep putting up with it because no one makes this four door design. Come on GE - make it happen!

I paid $2400 for a Samsung regrigerator 2017 and that was the sale price original price$3199. the ice machine was a nightmare several different so called repairs and new parts but nothing ever worked and still doesn’t. called Samsung several times ang got nowhere. After paying that much for a recrigetator you would think they would replace it but they didn’t. I e machine was located inside refrigerator next to the top shelf. I will never buy another Samsung product again! They knew about the problem but sold the refrigerators regardless. It’s all about making money even if the consumer ends up with a rotten egg! Be careful and research what your buying.

    Summary from Copilot Ai:

Refrigerator ice makers are moderately reliable, but in‑freezer ice makers are dramatically more reliable than in‑door refrigerator‑compartment ice makers. The placement is the single biggest predictor of lifespan and failure rate.

    ...

So where should the ice maker be?

    Best location for reliability:

Inside the freezer compartment (drawer or cabinet). This design lasts longer, jams less, leaks less, and maintains consistent ice quality.

    Worst location for reliability:

In the refrigerator door (in‑door dispenser). These fail more frequently due to temperature instability, gasket wear, frost buildup, and mechanical complexity.
