Not so "antique"...likely dates form the early 1950's and probably was for holding cigarettes.

LOL! Thanks ... my Mom gave me her pewter collection and said it was all very old.

The font used in the number stamped on the bottom is fairly modern, that indicated to me that the piece wasn't super antique.

It looks like an egg cup to me.

Thanks all. Olychick, I have discovered that my Mom doesn't really have the correct information about a lot of her things. So it really doesn't surprise me that this might not be old.

There was a great resurgence in popularity of pewter in the 1950's this piece appears to have come from that era. By the 50's we knew about the lead content in pewter and most of it was not intended to be used for food. But there were many vases, candle holders, fruit bowls, console sets etc sold during that period.

It could have held kitchen matches. (The last wood match maker in the USA has gone out of business.)

It could have held anything you choose...pretzels to name something else. But it's late 40's to 50's according to the mark and in that time period they weren't making kitchen match holders like that.
