Why would you wait for spring?

And part of why now for me is that this winter window is the time I have for this kind of project. But end of Feb I'll be working up the seed trays for the gardens, then onwards and just won't have time during the spring with everything else... and then would likely put it off entirely till next winter. I'd rather have the cacti up as seedlings by spring.

An update.. Pinetree seed order came in today. Most of the seeds are small and roundish or more to elongated roundish in a couple different hues. There's a couple bigger ones that are somewhat vase-like in shape, and a lighter tan.

I love the Germanation span- 5 days to 3 months. Baker Creek does not show as having even shipped yet.

I haven't sown cactus seeds in years, though had been successful when using a gritty lean mixture and being very careful with watering. For sure, go ahead and plant them now and sit them in your window (if the location is warm enough) or under lights. Last week, I had sown lewisia and these are now showing themselves.

Where do you get Lewisia seeds, please?

'Cause I thought Spring was the time to plant seeds, not Winter. Then again, I've rarely grown from seeds, except for Hoyas.

Over the last few years, I've purchased several packs of 'Elise' lewisia from Park Seed in the US. I've been ordering from Parks for decades and never have had a problem with their quality or troubles getting the seeds delivered to here in Canada. Actually, on the Park website, my review on 'Elise' is posted, the below is the resulting plants. From time to time Park has free shipping and sometimes even without a minimum order amount needed to be purchased, just sign up to get their email alerts. Otherwise, do some searching, the seeds could "possibly" be available in this country.

Karen, you are indeed correct, it's toooo early to start most other things. I just have those lewisia seeds on the go along with some very slow to establish tuberous begonias and some roses seedlings that always germinate very early on.

So, finally got around to getting the cactus seed sown. Along with a packet of a succulent mix from Johnny's. Figured if I mixed up some soil, might as well start those too. Ended up doing a mix of sand from the yard and some pro-mix- we got cactus that grow in the sand dunes around here, so figured it was good enough to work with these cactus seed too.

The Pinetree seed packet was sort of disappointing. It said 20 seed and I think it barely made that maybe. But it did have a couple bigger/weirder looking seed and little seed.

The Baker Creek seed packet was indeed generous- and looked like 2 kinds of small oval seed, one matte/dull, the other glossy/shiny.

For pots I used recycled mushroom tubs- I find those are darn nice for this sort of growing a bunch of seed. Right now I have the tubs in bins with clear lids on them in a warm south facing window. I've seen some conflicting information on if I should have them closed with lids on them or not, but I do usually do all my other seed covered at first.
