Your hood provides the lighting. And is designed to be cleanable from the inevitable grease and dirt.

I agree, your hood should give enough lighting over the cooktop. You can add additional lighting under the upper cabinets as well.

" Not sure of hanging anything" means you HAVE no venting hood? Fix that issue, and the problem is solved.

You ARE explaining it. You have a down draft venting. No it isn't UNSAFE to put a light over the cook top. The pop up hood is supposed to be running when you cook, and help minimize grease. They are not particularly effective, but cleaning a light won't kill you either. All that may happen is that it will get dirty. We don't know your ceiling height, thus can't advise WHAT this lighting could or should be. It sounds as though you have only an eight foot ceiling and hence the light you now have, which you don't consider to be decorative. It is probably BEST replaced with two or three recessed lights.

Bottom line is when you provide limited info, you get answers that aren't very helpful.Post a photo of the entire kitchen, cook top included. Ceiling HEIGHT as well.

I will try to send picture I am a basic computer person. It is not the cleaning that concerns me. I went to a lighting store in my area and the salesperson was the one who said not to use anything hanging if grease splatters the glass can shatter. Wanted another opinion thanks

    Hi Loretta,

I think that something like the canopies in the photos below would look great above an island cooktop. It wouldn't hang too low, so no grease would splash on it. We can customize any color or dimensions that fit your needs.

The salesperson is nuts: ) You still haven't said what the ceiling height is and yes it makes a big difference in ANY selection.

You quite literally might be the rudest non-reading person. It made me laugh. She was more than clear what advise she seeked. Read thoroughly. Then reply.
