I would actually stain the cabinets darker that will make the floors and counter appear lighting and give some weight to the room, as to paint, I think to really update it you need to get rid of the texture, the color isn't bad, if you change the light bulbs out to something more around 3500K it will all appear less yellow and more white.

I dont think changing out the mirror is going to improve anything. You have faucets coming out of the wall, and that makes the placement for a mirror too high up. The mirror you have looks very nice from what I can see of it, its just too high up on the wall.

If you want "modern" and you don't plan on changing your flooring, countertop, or sink, your best move would be to replace the faucet, light fixtures, and cabinet hardware, and stain the cabinets a darker color. Lighter on the cabinets and walls won't do it...

Thought I am not a fan of oak cabinets, yours appear to be well made. I might simply consider using Briwax Liming Wax to update the appearance.

The mirror and the sconces don't seem to coordinate with your sink and faucets. The lifted edge on the mirror is really not attractive in this bathrooom

The round mirror reinforces the shape of your sink.
