Given the fact that winter still hasn't bothered to show up to work here in Eastern Pennsylvania, and some clearance Allium sphaerocephalon fell into my mailbox somehow, I am trying to find a spot to plant them. I have heard they have a tendency to spread and self seed, but in my particular garden situation, I don't mind that. I see online that they tolerate part shade. I have some rather ugly and boring liriope came with my house, and since these alliums share that grassy foliage look, I was wondering if I could interplant them with the liriope to add some interest. The location is a sort of bright shade under a very high canopy of deciduous trees. Other bulbs grow there in the early spring, but since these bloom later, would under a tree competing with liriope be too much for this allium to handle? Anyone have experience growing it in shade or competition with other plants?Thanks much for any input!
