I guess it depends on the tile and where these two spaces are in relation to each other. I don’t like these style of tiles on fireplaces but I would need to see your space and your style.

Hi, just yesterday I was reading a thread with a few posters regretting the use of cement tile both on floors and around a fireplace. Staining and water spots were the biggest issues (on the floor, but it seems maybe the tiles were not as well sealed as they needed to be). And the other poster had issues with her tiles cracking and becoming discoloured around her fireplace.

There are many ceramic tiles made now to mimic the look of concrete tiles but much more durable and less work intensive for upkeep. You may wish to explore that option. I haven't found the thread yet that I'm referring to, but I will update later with a link if I find it. Best to read a few DD items here before making your final tile decisions.

I love the look of the patterned cement (encaustic) tiles - so very pretty, but it sounds like they might be more work than some are able to/interested in putting in.

Cement is POROUS. In fact it is WORSE than marble. It is SOOO porous it takes extra effort to maintain. It must be sealed (like marble) as many as 3 times at the time of install (once before the tile is installed and then twice more after install but before grouting).

Whew! And that's for day 1. Now imagine the HOMEOWNER maintenance every 6 months (can require resealing OR polish). And if you add a POLISH (temporary polymer finish) you need to STRIP the tiles every 5 applications (every 2 years) and start all over again.

Sounds like fun doesn't it? Homeowner Know Thyself. If you HATE floors that need to be babied...and you HATE the idea of a floor that WILL STAIN (possibly with the grout....which means BEFORE you ever use the space) then cement tiles are NOT for you.

Right. That's why man created porcelain tiles made to look like cement tiles.

In addition to the maintenance, these trendy encaustic tiles will soon be on the way out. I'd make another selection that would have more longevity.
