I still have not even started picking the meyers, and have more Italian lemons on the trees. I need to start baking!

Good recipes anyone?

Hi Laura! Not sure if you like Indian food, but I made Halal Cart Chicken the other night, using the juice from two lemons and it was delicious! Here’s the recipe:

Would love to see pictures of your ST lemons! I’m still waiting on mine to fruit.

Wow Laura your ST lemons look great! I wish I could’ve grown one, they tree just didn’t like it here in the desert, yours are fantastic though, super jealous! I’m always a big fan of lemon meringue pie and lemon bars with graham cracker crust.

Thanks Evan! You probably have enough citrus on your hands lol! The problem is that if I make all those delicious recipes, I’ll eat them! I may try muffins tomorrow to start. My daughter found an article with 32 citrus baking recipes and wanted to work our way down the list. She’s a bit too ambitious...

That’s my problem too Laura I want to eat all the goodies, LOL. And yes I have more lemons than I know what to do with right now. Lemon is really good in scones too, check out this recipe.

Beautiful fruit, Laura! (Sorry, apparently Houzz did not post my comment the other day). Evan, I’m sorry to hear your ST didn’t thrive in your climate. Mine is over 6ft tall in the container, but it refuses to fruit lol.

Anything you make, bake or drink will be better with Meyers. There is a local group of ladies making candied Meyer peels dipped in chocolate.. to die for; because the peel of the Meyer is not bitter.

Cluster of lemons that I pulled off my eureka today.

Beautiful Evan!! I have one eureka still maturing.

The peal of the new Zealand lemonade has a nice texture and taste with no bitterness. The fruit is also edible out of hand with less acid than most oranges for a very nice unsweeten lemonade taste.

Beautiful Laura! Nice problem to have! Are these your favorite lemons? Have you ever tried the Bearrs? or the Harvey lemon?

BTW, Do you still have your New Zealand Lemonade? I might be interested in it or maybe some cuttings if you still have it. The Oroblanco has three fairly large fruit already. It continues to bloom. That plant is crazy and just wants to grow and bloom! It is probably the most fragrant of all my citrus as well. Sure enjoying it!

Hey Dave! I pulled 5 small lemons from my Bearss this year (first year fruiting). They’re in the fridge, but I hope to try them this weekend. Hopefully this year will yield a better crop :).

Laura, with those fat lemons and hopefully tops in taste, do one real needs that many more varieties. I’ll be happy if mine looks like that next fall, hopefully.

If you have not tried lemon curd, it's a must when you have an over-abundance of lemons.

This recipe looks similar to mine. You can probably back off the sugar for a little more tart final result. I made this with direct heat in a glass pot but was super careful to whisk constantly. I do recommend that you pour this through a strainer soon after removing from heat....i.e., before it begins to get thicker as it cools. My curd had some egg white remnants that scrambled a bit and I think needed to be strained out.

You can also do this with other citrus....and you can fold the lemon curd into whipped cream to make a fluffier, less tart, topping for pies and cakes...or just dip ginger snaps in the whipped cream/curd mixture!

    Kelley,

Unless your lemons are waxed, it is better to not put them in the refri; it will only dessicate them unnecessarily

John M, I love my Meyers too! I’ll try to candy their peel as well. Other John - thanks for that recipe. I am going to make it! Evan, that is a nice group of lemons! I don’t know what you do with all the fruit you get! I have enough trouble using mine up. Bob, yes you are right. I like all my lemon trees though :). I have two (maybe 3) orange trees i want to re-home. Dave, it’s hard to say about the lemons. If say that my two favorites (if I really had to pick) are ST and Meyer. I know many don’t like Meyers around here, but I do. I think Alexander (my big Meyer) is still my favorite tree. This year it has not produced as much and the ST has produced tons. Other years it has done very well though. I find the ST growth habit annoying because it is so wide. I’m giving it a good pruning this spring, so I should have plenty of bud wood. The other two that have really impressed me are the Genoa and Villafranca. Both are vigorous growers and the Genoa lemons are big, gorgeous, and juicy. However, the tree is younger so I thinned the fruit, which likely explains the size....nice lemons though. I don’t have a Harvey, but I have a Bearrs. My Bears is not as vigorous, but it’s hard to generalize. Dave, I can give you NZL bud wood and ST if you like.

Laura, I was just boo hooing over my ST, and low and behold, it finally has blooms! My Genoa does too! Now the little villafranca and Siracusano need to hurry up and grow :)

My ratio, Mandarins/ lemon is ten to one. For every lemon I use per week I can eat two mandarins a day, times 30 days, gosh, I need help.

Bob that sounds good to me!! I have mandarins that ripen at different times and this year (which is the first year I’ve harvested a substantial number of mandarins and oranges) it has worked out well because around the time I finish with one variety, the other is nearly ready. I still have a tree with nearly ripe mandarins and then I wait till next year...or actually fall of this year.

The main use for lemons I use, every morning a 10 oz glass of water, 1/2 Meyer lemon, a t-spoon of real honey, just to down some pills.

Right now we are eating an orange to lemon rate of 1 to 1.

Laura, while doing some citrus web research, I came across the familiaserra.eu website. Has some good info and the recipes look right up your alley.

Thank you Ken! I’ll look at it for sure!

Laura, I will take you up on budwood. But I have to reassess my root stock situation right now! Not sure I have any! If my citrandarins root, I might be able to graft onto citrandarin.

Laura, be sure to click their blog section to get to the recipes, some are in their recipe and others are in the blog itself (like the

    Magic chocolate cake with tangerines).

Dave, if you want some FD seedlings for root stock, let me know. I've got a probably 30-40 germinated from nov fruit all in a 3 gal pot that I'll spread out once spring gets here.
