Basic Backsplash/Countertop Transition Question

I am still in the idea stage of remodeling our kitchen, and I'm curious what the thinking is regarding backsplashes. Specifically, I am wondering if there are some best practices regarding how to handle transitions.

The two pictures represent what we currently have--very old! As you may be able to see, the current countertops are dark green formica, with a built-in backsplash. Above that is simply the wallpaper that is on all of the wall space in the kitchen. We have upper cabinets above all of the counters, with soffits above the cabinets. One of the runs abuts a side wall, as shown below, and we have a side cabinet next to the cooktop, with a microwave/hood over the cooktop.

It seems a no-brainer to cover the area between counter and upper cabinets with a backsplash, which is what I see in most Houzz stories. But when you have a corner, do you continue the backsplash onto the side wall, and--if so--do you end it in line with where the cabinet ends, or keep going to the front side edge of the countertop? Does any of this make sense?

I am trying to avoid having myself, or a future buyer say, "why the heck did they do THAT?"

Also, does anyone still use a simple 4" backsplash, or is that considered dated?

I think of a back splash as primarily functional. With that said, if you foresee splatters hitting that wrap around wall, I'd tile it to the counter edge. Like this:

If that area will be splatter free, just tile to the wall, like this:

My preference is the 2nd example. A good wall paint can hold up to washing.

I don't consider the 4" back splash dated. I do think they need the right context, though. For example, a specialty hand painted tile in a 1930's arts and crafts house would be completely appropriate. Maybe not so much in a an industrial Manhattan loft.

I think a 4" backsplash generally looks dated, but you can sometimes use a 6" one if you don't have upper cabinets. If you have cabinets above however, I think the best option is almost always tiling up to the bottom of the cabinets.

I’d just paint that part of the wall on the side.
If you want tile, go with all tile and not the 4” piece. It’s one or the other.
It’s always best to get cabs, countertop and flooring in before choosing a splash choice

The bigger DATER is the soffits. Can they go? If all they contain is recessed lighting, they can definitely go bye, bye

Post the kitchen and the PLAN, before you worry about what to do with a backsplash: )

That , as Beth stated, should a one or the other decision of tile or riser. Not both, and should be chosen last . It gets installed.........LAST.

Using the counter material as a short side splash often works well in conjunction with a decorative tall backsplash when the side walls need some form of protection. It’s what we did here, because of the sink position and messy little helpers.

Millennial, I think those are our cabinets! They are at least the same vintage. In the AFTER photos, are those new cabinets, since they go all the way up?

Jan Moyer, thanks. I'll take your word as a pro on the soffits, but I'm curious--why are they considered dated? I get it if you want to continue the cabinets all the way to the ceiling, but what is more desirable about the blank space above, if you don't continue to the ceiling?

They're unnecessary. They were a way ( an inexpensive way ) to buy shorter cabinets, and run wires for recessed lighting.

The point is, the lights can go IN the ceiling, and you can have taller cabinetry/trim to the ceiling and a more open feel. That's why they are "dated"
