Help! Digging up hostas in winter time?

Unfortunately due to a damaged storm water pipe in my back yard I’m going to have to dig up several young hostas that I planted late last year. Not ideal but they are right in the path of the pipe that must be dug up. Im thinking of putting them in a pot and burying the pot and covering up with leaves so they’re easy and I move back in the spring. Any better suggestions that might help me preserve these hostas?

I live near Charlotte, NC. Thanks in advance
