You are correct -- leaving hips to form on a rose will tend to discourage it from blooming more (as opposed to deadheading the spent blooms, encouraging it to bloom again). If this is a hybrid tea, then it might not come back in your zone anyway so this may be a moot point. You may already know this, but the seeds won't produce plants that are the same as their parent. Only cuttings do that. If I were you I'd forget about the seeds and go look at the roses available for your zone at High Country Roses, so you can try a few that might perform better for you before you start propagating roses from seed. That's a really slow way to increase your rose collection. ;)

If you leave all of the blooms to go to seed then yes, it can slow bloom production. However, if you only leave one or two that you have pollinated it shouldn't have a great affect on bloom production. I will warn you though, hips are like sugar CANDY to the deer. If you want any hips to mature to ripeness you will have to find some way to deter the deer from eating them. I even have squirrels that steal my hips in the early fall so I cover mine with aluminum foil to keep them safe. It looks a little odd, and the neighbors think I'm nuts, but, hey, you do what you have to do, lol!

Seil thanks for the warning, that is a great idea about the foil! I am willing to try anything to keep the deer at bay, and my neighbors already think I am nuts for trying to grow roses at all in Wyoming.

K S thank you :) I love to shop at HCR when I can afford it, learning to raise cuttings and seedlings is partly trying to grow my garden on a tight budget and partly for the fun of raising roses that don't exist anywhere else. And maybe if I can grow a good cold hardy one, to share with friends and family...maybe someday!
