Design Dilemma Dining Room

Table proportions

I'm going to have a dining room table made for us to match a handmade walnut island top. I want it to fit 6-8 people comfortably, and I'd like it to be wide enough for a table runner plus place mats. I was thinking about asking for a 42" wide table, but how long should it be? Is about 90" proportional, or would it need to be a 96"? That seems a little long for our dining room. Thanks for your help.

IMO 8’ is the perfect length it give a nice seating area along the sides and 42” is good. I generally do not use a runner and placemats but I do use runners for placemats I have 6 and I run them across the table to rake the place of a runner and placemats . I would suggest pedestal bases instead of legs it allow for nice seating and the ability to add a chair on each side in a pinch so seats 10. Of course the size of you space will decide the table size .You really should have 3’ all around the table . If 96” is too big I would do 84” x 42” This is the idea with the table runners and of course in any style you like
