I would remove the pavers and put travertine throughout. In my opinion, I think it will look like a display at a stone yard if you blend the 2 different materials. It will be too much of a contrast. Travertine is much more elegant looking than pavers.

It also allows for better control over getting proper pitch on the patio/setting heights. I"ll bet the pavers are pitching away from the house towards the new pool anyway. The idea is to pitch away from the pool edge.

problem is this... we just paid to have that patio put in a year ago... it is a 16x40 patio, so not small. the pool was not on the radar a year ago!! I don't have it in the budget to rip that up and replace it. do you know if there is a way to paint/stain/refinish the pavers to make them blend better with the travertine?

Too bad. Painting or staining the pavers would probably look crappy and your locked into refinishing annually to maintain that same look.

There are many shades of travertine. Perhaps one will blend the best.

You've tried to explain with words your proposal for blending the two materials. In a hardscape plan, details matter, and it's impossible to know that we're envisioning with any precision or accuracy. Show your ideas in plan form. All that's needed is a simple line sketch.

Also, the picture you're showing is severely limited, showing no surroundings. Stand with the camera in line with the center of what would be the most important viewpoint. Take 3 slightly overlapping pictures (aiming left, center & right) so we can see the pool & deck in their surroundings. Be sure NOT to change the camera location between shots. Merely pivot.

I would not mix two different types of borders, but I do like the idea of having borders. I would make them all travertine, if you do decide to go with borders.
