I think it depends on the decor in the rest of your home.

Consider surrounding colors for the runner, and consider the texture of the runner material: ease of vacuuming is important, and a texture which won’t grab dirt particles.

This needs to work with the rest of the house so post some pics of surrounding area.

I’m still struggling with the paint color. On my monitor, in first pic it looks yellowy in stairway, and then gray below the stairs to the floor. Upstairs looks yellow to me. I like the runners posted above but they are definitely gray. Please post more pics as Patricia posted.

So the upstairs is a parchment color and the downstairs is comparable. Question is what size rugs should I use upstairs? The larger area at top of stairs would be served by a 5x6 area rug but that wouldn't go in front of the bathroom to my bedroom at end of hall which would be 2'3 x 7... is it ok if they are not touching or connected?
