Wintersowing in open pots?

Last year was my first year wintersowing. I had wonderful success, but had trouble finding containers that I liked. Milk jugs worked extremely well, but we get all

of our milk in glass bottles and the local Starbucks doesn’t save their milk jugs. I do have plenty of plain nursery pots. Can you wintersow in open containers or is the “mini greenhouse” effect necessary? Worried that the seeds will get washed away or the tiny plants may not handle the changing extremes as well if they are in the open. Any experience, anyone? Thank you!
