Mixing patterns - Help!

Hi. I'd love some advice from the design-minded. :)

I'm looking to get window coverings for the window in my home office space. Most of the window covering fabrics I'm coming across have patterns.

The rug I bought for the room has a floral pattern (this is the website photo, not my room).

I'm totally stumped which direction to go in with the window fabric.

Other useful information - the walls are cream, the wood trim crisp white, the floors are jacobean (dark) hardwood.

What would you do for window coverings?

Huge thank you for any help you can provide!

    So the rug is lavender?

Try Overstock or Wayfair for gray or beige drapery panels.

Hi! Yes, the rug is lavender/purple.

I was thinking about a faux roman shade or regular roman shade mounted above the window - there is just one single window in the room and I want to keep things light/bright in there.

So you're advocating for a solid window covering fabric, not a pattern? Honestly, I'm not loving grey or beige in the space.

This is the desk I have in the room - I'm going for a feminine home office vibe, just want to make sure it doesn't veer into the juvenile or dizzying with conflicting patterns.

Hi, Can anyone chat with me about this a bit? Thanks!

    Oh, ok. Thank you!

The room is a bit of a mess - still decluttering - here's the gist.

It's a small-ish bedroom that I'm turning into a dedicated home office. The stationary bike and stool is relocating to the basement. The stack of wrapping paper in the corner will go too. The current rug is filled with pulls from the vacuum so that's going too.

There's a tan upholstered daybed in there right now - haven't decided if I might just leave it but dress it more like a sofa than a bed.

So it's all in one place, here's the carpet that's en route:

    Closer view of the desk/chair.

Thank you so much for your help and ideas!! :)

A lavender and white office, ..........hmmmm. I've seen plum used successfully, but not with white for an adult. It gets tricky.

Yes, that's why I'm stuck. I don't want it to look juvenile. I'm thinking the rug might need to go.

The desk chair is plum, so we could go with plum and other complimentary colors.

If I returned the rug and started over, what would you recommend for the floor/window?

Your rug is throwing me off. If this were my space, I would do a black and white zebra rug and a solid color for the drapes. As for what color drapes, it depends on the other elements that are remaining. Is the tan bed staying? Is there art in the room?

I have a small room that is dark purple. I used rust colored drapes. Other colors that I like with dark purple are mint green, teal, and bright yellow.

Yeah, the rug is now a nonstarter.

What would you do if the person wasn't a zebra person?

I would do a sheepskin rug or a Moroccan rug.

I'd consider a Moroccan rug - but I have a lot of trellis pattern in my house (including in the runner in the hallway right outside the door of this room). Is that what you were meaning when you suggested Moroccan?

I was thinking something like this but I am not sure that it would compliment a trellis pattern.

Any of these in a flat Roman shade would be lovely.

That's oddly similar to the grey/white rug that's in there now...

Yes, I like the rug that is there now.

There should’ve been a fourth fabric, but it didn’t post. So, here it is:

My attempt at photoshopping Moroccan rug and black/white curtains...

There’s nothing “juvenile” about the rug you ordered. I’m not sure why some think that there is.

This might work. It's a bit abstract so it's not too feminine or juvenile looking.

Well if you're not keeping the rug post again when you have another one. However, you have a decent size wall with one window. I'd hang drapes on that window with a pretty rod. Make sure you hang them outside the window so the leading edge of the drapes don't cover the glass. Also, the rod should about halfway between the top trim and the ceiling.
