Can I miter existing crown molding while it's on the wall?

We are adding a bookcase that we want to be built in which includes crown molding along the top. The room already has crown molding so I was wondering if anyone has mitered into existing molding while it is on the wall, or if I have to remove the existing molding, miter it and put it back??

I wonder if now days, an oscillation saw is used.

It's probably possible. It will also probably be easier with a better outcome to take it down and cut it.

You might be able to use an oscillating saw but I can’t imagine the joint would look very good. I’d take down the existing piece

Cope the new into the existing. Better joint.
