A powder room should have an exhaust fan to get rid of smells and provide some background noise to make guest feel less self conscious.

Buy a fan only unit, have the fan moved to the corner, over the toilet, and then install a light fixture in the center of the ceiling.

You need a fan. There are a lot of combo units that are quiet and provide good lighting. Or, are loud, if you want greater privacy for the room.

Thanks for your responses. All walls are spray foamed insulation for sound attenuation. No one has ever used this fan in four years! And there’s a window if needed. The prob is that the lightbulb up top doesn’t throw enough light down onto mirror area so there’s a bit of shadow at night time. My real question is any thoughts , without drywall redo, on converting the space of a fan/ light combo into an over head light. I was wondering if conversion light systems are already out there. I think there needs to be more than one light bulb and probably not an opaque covering the light what’s there now.

Just get one with a better light.

I Agree with Chispa, placing a semi-flush at the center of the powder room will give you a great amount of light.

Didn’t receive any suggestions that were useful. It looks like I’ll have to replace ceiling in order to eliminate the huge square cut out—not something I’m eager to do in a new house! I I’m not worried about ventilation as there’s a window in that room. And for the responses that said it’s essential, well, no one has turned on the fan yet in four years!

Oh, that ceiling medallion idea is fantastic! Do either of you know if the wiring is the same (like standard light fixture wiring behind the fan)?

There would still be a shadow on the mirror area. The problem is you don't have a light on either side of the mirror.
