Agree 100% with above. Carry the same flooring from your neighboring room into your kitchen.

Same wood

Same flooring as adjacent rooms. Yes it "makes sense" in the kitchen. Most any new home is a wood kitchen floor.. It' severy inch of a first floor, except very wet baths and a laundry. It's the second floor too : ) whenever possible

Thought I'd tell you that before you asked.

I don’t like wood flooring in the kitchen, although I know a lot of people do. I’ve had two dishwashers leak. It wasn’t a problem because my kitchen floor had ceramic tile.

I’d do a 12” x 24” tile in a 1/3 offset pattern with matching grout. Dark, contrasting grout draws too much attention to the floor and to me, that’s an old look for this size tile. I would not do wood-look tile next to real wood, nor would I attempt to match the color of your adjacent wood floor in tile.

There are 2 additional areas as part of the kitchen that will be included in this renovation: the small laundry room and pantry. I guess laundry room is a Potentially wet area. we like the 12x24 tile and recently put a gray color in our powder room. We expected to put the same one in the kitchen, but not sure if it looks good with the other grays..... I can post a pic of that tile later! any ideas on what color 12x24 poreclain tile would look good with these counters and back splash ??

It’s so hard to appreciate colors online. You’ll have to get samples to see what looks good with your countertop (granite?). Look for tiles that are similar to a color in your countertop. Your cabinets look to be a warm white, so keep that in mind too. I wouldn’t go too dark with the tile.

Get all materials together and post. I would not do a gray counter AND a gray floor. A pantry isn't a "we"t area, a laundry is best with tile for machines, bleach spills etc. . We don't even know where pantry is.: )

What about coloring the grout so it matches the tile?? See what you think about that.

I too am not a fan of wood flooring in the kitchen, but, it is a personal preference. I personally like flooring that defines the room, not goes thruout the whole house. But, that is just me!!! I know, I am not "in style" right now! And, I am okay with that.

Don't cut up small spaces and make them "smaller" , Art, rugs, etc can define space

Since your wood floor appears to be factory finished or engineered hardwood, it will be INTENSELY difficult to match it. If you can...great but don't set your hopes on it. For that reason I vote "no" to continuing the wood. Not because it would look 'bad' but because it will be near impossible to find.

Now onto the question at hand. You have counters that 'read' gray (regardless of the other colours found in them...from 10ft away they look gray = reads gray). You have backslpash that reads gray.

You have what appear to be (photos can be deceiving) off-white cabs and a light tan colour on the walls. In other words you have a monochromatic scheme in the kitchen. That makes this a bit more difficult to deal with.

Your hardwoods are a deep espresso colour (which mean you have a dark house). This would be easier if the wood was lighter...but that probably won't change for another 10 years....so we have to deal with things as they are.

Personally I would say a 'vein cut' travertine-look porcelain tile will look very good in the kitchen. BUT any colour you add to the kitchen (gray with some gray and some off white) is going to have issues with the DARK reddish/brown hardwood. That's where things will need work.

Personally I think the ideal colour is currently on your kitchen floor. It is light, it is bright and it is soft enough to work with the wood.

An update at this point would be a repeat of what you have. Or you have to choose a THIRD colour for your kitchen. Right now you don't have a third colour. You have monochromatic.

A blue slate-look tile would work but your kitchen will look VERY dark...as in 'black hole' dark. A dark(er) floor will require a lighting update, a paint up date and then furniture update. Dark wood table on dark flooring is a tough look to 'like'. That would mean you either update the stools and table OR you find a WHITE or very light AREA RUG to help define the table from the floor (this is super helpful when walking through late at night with the lights off...your toes will thank you for it).

Think this through. And think through the hardwood as well. And think through the wall colours and the budget for new lighting (as in adding 50% more lighting).

If you can't go all the exact same wood in kitchen, or need tile to feel confident about wet issues, choose a tile in a similar color category as the wood floor. Go to the lighter or darkest shades so an imperfect match looks compatible. Even a matte black hex tile or this multi would look nice and intentional for transition. cutting a few hex tiles into the wood at the seams is on trend now. The 12x24 pic has mosaic inserts to draw the darker wood tones into the lighter gray tile. just make sure tile is not a linear pattern that will compete with wood grain.

Re-use and purpose here.... I'd get the best grout cleaning service. From here, it's a basic blend of floor, paint, and counter...

Not an insult to you, but what if you spent instead on a pull-out for trash can, etc... a nice thing [I hear].
