How hard is your water? Why not use a water softener - which will actually remove the hardness (and is the only thing that will)?

HousePure is primarily selling a carbon filter - which does nothing at all for hardness.

The particular filter that you are mentioning also includes a KDF 55 medium. Saying that KDF 55 will prevent scaling is a stretch - and even they know that. There's a waiver that you must sign before they will process the order.

A decent water softener with a Fleck control valve is about $600 on Amazon. It actually will soften your water.

Are you on a well or on municipal water?

Hey Jake, thanks for the reply. I'm on municipal water. I don't know exactly how hard it is, but if you have a chance, this PDF is the most recent water quality report from my area (last two pages):

I'm don't know what to look for in the report to indicate hard water.

Lately, I've noticed a lot of white buildup around the bathroom faucets (black fixtures show everything) along with dried water spots and this was one of the things I was told the filter would help prevent. The product information also says, "this system extends the life of plumbing fixtures".

Which system on Amazon are you suggesting?

I'm not seeing a hardness level in the report (it's not required).

You will need to know this in order to know what size of a system to purchase as well as to program the valve.

Buy a test kit from Amazon first. "Hach 145300 Total Hardness Test Kit, Model 5-B" and test your water. It's simple and takes 10 minutes.

I'm not endorsing this particular seller - so do your own homework. Again, you will need to know how hard your water is before you can do anything. Once you know that post again and I can talk you through a properly sized system. Buy the test kit and test the hardness level in your water.

KDF-55 - when incorporated as part of a properly designed filtering system - can remove certain contaminants and enhance a down-stream carbon filter. That filter will not remove calcium or magnesium even if it's properly designed (and it's questionable that this is properly designed). To remove hardness you need a water softener.

You can call out BS on things pretty quickly by measuring.

With a water softener you measure the water before treatment with your test kit -- and then after the softer is installed. You will see the hardness level go from say 14 grains per gal to less than 1. That's how you know it's working. You won't see that with your proposed HousePure filter.

We have had the HP-02 for three years and it is fantastic. Water tastes better and tested much more pure. Highly recommend.

We've had our HP-02 for a little over 4 years (in north San Diego county). We also installed a pre-sediment filter. Water tastes great and no visible issues with scaling. Back washes every Friday. Super happy!
