I have ordered several things from Bluestone Perennials over the years and usually they come in pretty good shape and size. Hydrangeas, hostas, winter berries, a few other shrubs and perennials. The one thing I was really disappointed in was Hosta 'Humpback Whale'. It was so tiny I wrote to Bluestone that it looked more like a minnow. I put it in a large pot and put clay pots around it to keep digging rodents out. It took a few years to reach a good size, probably big enough to put in the ground this year.

I've picked up larger Hostas locally for half the price so it pays to look around town first. For example I got Empress Wu from WFF (White Flower Farm) for $35. A year later I got the same plant from our local nursery chain that was twice as big and half the price.

Anyway, I would treat most mail order plants as babies so that they can become a beauty in your yard.

Here is Humpback Whale as received in 2015 and put in an 18 inch pot as i have lost small hostas and perennials put right into the ground. I added the fern from a friend but it didn't make it.
