Formal Dining Room Help

Hi All,

I’m looking to transform this space into a formal dining room. Thinking round table with 8 chairs.

Definitely getting rid of this orange paint (finally!!).

I’m definitely drawn to more rustic/farmhouse style furniture (see pics of kitchen dining table and family room), so thinking I should do something to switch it up a bit in this dining room.

Would love and thoughts or ideas of what to do in here.

Thank you in advance,
Pam

Since your kitchen table is already round, I would do this one rectangle with the ability to extend for large parties. You would need a 72" round table to seat 8...those are mostly over $2K just for the table.

Thank you!! Is there a style you’d recommend?

And the room is almost a perfect square - (11ft 10inches x 11ft). You still think rectangular? Thank you!

Sorry formal DR and rustic farmhouse do not compute in my brain.

That’s why I’m asking for help. How do I change the vibe of the dining room from the rest of the house. Also, i’m not looking for super formal. Just a bigger space to entertain for Thanksgiving and Holidays. Does that make sense?

If I were you I would keep the vibe of the rest of the house - this is your style. For the formal dining room I would step it up a notch - get this as a forever piece of furniture - Solid wood, reclaimed wood, maybe even live edge if you can find one that is more natural.

Chairs don't have to all match, but need to work together.

We have a local eclectic furniture store that sells live edge slabs and bases. I have also found local artisans who do this type of wood work. Used furniture stores often have great solid wood tables.

From Etsy - many similar items available.

You need a dining table, cabinet to go near window to place a vase of flower some tall floor plants in the corners . Perhaps, large art work on the longer wall facing table. I would go for either traditional or rustic style dining furniture ( if that is what you like).

I agree with Jennifer ... since the room is so open, I wouldn’t veer too far away from your casual/rustic style. It could look very disjointed.

Examples: these have a more formal feel, while keeping a connection to the rest of the house:

Looks like you've been given good ideas, but I love your big fork and spoon. I looked for some after the episode of Everybody Loves Raymond and I didn't find any. :)

Haha! I got them at Pottery Barn a few years ago!

So rectangular table even based on square shape of room?

It’s hard to say for sure without being there in person, but it seems like it could work with the way the room is open on the one side.

There’s also the option of a square table with 8 chairs, 2 on each side. I have a good friend who has that in her small-ish dining room and it works well. (They use benches on these examples, of course you could do all chairs):

And if you really want a round one, you can certainly do that. I have found that some round ones with that many chairs can feel crowded, though.

Are you sold on purchasing a " new" table? If not, I would check CL and Marketplace for a USED set. I constantly see wonderful dining sets at great prices. You could use just the table and use more updated chairs. I cannot imagine spending $2000 on a table.

Grapefruit1 - I own a coffee table, end table, sofa back table, sofa and recliner that I bought new. Everything else in my home was used. Got my dining room table, 8 chairs and hutch for $1500 - solid teak. Went to a danish design store and showed them pictures - they looked up the furniture by the same designer and quoted me over 10k for the pieces I got.

There is just nothing more fun than a great find!
