Suggestion needed

I just attended a 90th birthday party for a friend. She was an accomplished quilter in days past. She has not quilted/sewn for two or three years, although she talked about it. They recently moved her to assisted living.

She was last working on a grandmother's flower garden. She had made all the "flowers" (by hand) and had started sewing them to white background squares. I would love to have those "flowers", so that the quilt could be finished. No one in her family quilts that I am aware of. I have no idea what they did with her quilting supplies, quilts in progress, etc. They did bring her machine to the assisted living facility, although it's the one she never learned to use (Viking Diamond?).

Every time I think about asking her daughter about the quilt, I feel like a ghoul. (I recently had to liquidate a friend's belongings and really resented those who seemed to covet his belongings.) I know the daughter, but we are not friends.

Any suggestions? (I should mention that she gave me her Dresden Plate quilt a couple of years ago, so I have one of her quilts. She won a blue ribbon for it in the county fair.)

Bkay, will you be visiting your friend at the ALF? Maybe you could work on the flowers together while you visit with her. Let her (and her daughter) know you really want to see her beautiful quilt finished so it can be used.

Donna - that's a great idea!!! I was thinking of something similar.

    Good luck.

Yes, I do visit her, but her quilting stuff is not there - only the Viking sewing machine. I guess I could ask her, but her short term memory is gone. It's unlikely she knows where it is. She probably wouldn't remember to ask her daughter about it, either. She had surgery twice within three months last fall, and her brain has not recovered.

Ask the daughter. What is there to lose? Tell her you would like to work on the quilt when you go to visit her mom.

Also, normally the flowers are sewn together without background squares. Did she use cardboard piecing? If so, it’s really easy to do, and very relaxing.

I don't know how she did the piecing. The first time I saw it, she was arranging it. That was probably four or five years ago. It wasn't on a white background. I saw it out and rearranged many times. Then one day when I visited, she had started putting it on white. She just turns the edges and bastes them and then appliques it to the white. She loves applique, so her choice rings true to her style. She has more than enough squares to make a quilt. This is her last quilt, I'm sure.

Thanks for your suggestions. I'll let you know how it goes if I ask for it.

Bkay, what were your plans for the quilt after you finished it? If you were going to return it to the family, I think you could come right out and tell them that you'd like to finish it for them. If they would not appreciate it and you planned to keep it or give it to someone else, then I think the ideas above are good ones. I hope you're able to get the quilt finished.

I would be willing to finish it for her. I'm don't think I would be willing to finish it for her son or daughter. I guess that's my dilemma.
