Basement flooring suggestions

Hello,

We have two bedrooms and rec room in our basement are looking for flooring options. We want to stay away from carpet. The house is on a lake so we would like durable and waterproof. Our builder has recommended the luxury vinyl flooring as an option. We are also looking at the engineered hardwood flooring as well. What about a cork floor? Welcome your input.

We used Coretec because of the water issue..we have sump pumps and back-ups, but things can break down..We did have a leak from a booster pump and the floor was wet for a month because we didn't really go in that part of the basement..no damage to the floor at all. We lifted it and cleaned underneath and let it dry.

We did dri-core with vinyl plank it seems to keep the floor warmer and we have a pool and a free run dog run with big dogs it mops up at the end of the day and looks like new 12 yrs later .

Absolutely go for the luxury vinyl! Much better when it comes to moisture and super inexpensive these days! It's the perfect floor for a basement and it can really look like an engineered hardwood floor. The difference to me is really the feeling on your feet but I tend to put area rugs down to help separate spaces anyways. Because it's a basement the feel underfoot will be much cooler regardless. Engineered hardwood has a top layer of wood so it's got a bit more texture and warmth to it. The vinyl 'can' have texture to it or can be smooth - just depends on the finish you choose. Will be much cooler underfoot and will obviously have a much different feeling than wood.

If I were doing my basement - I'd choose the luxury vinyl. The cost is just too good!

***Keep in mind - the labour to install is most likely much cheaper as well.***

I was about to suggest cork floating flooring. It is clicked together (like laminate...easier than vinyl) and then, if you are worried, you can add a coat (or 2) of polyurethane on top. This adds to the durability of the finish as well as seals the joints against moisture penetration.

Cork is warm and quiet. It is the PERFECT carpet replacement product. To be clear, vinyl does NOT allow an insulating underlayment underneath it. If you want warm, you have to do something else to a room with vinyl (like add more heat). I would say 99% of vinyl products on the market do not allow an underpad. That's the main difference between vinyl and laminate. They both LOOK alike but they act very differently.
