Flowers for bees

My husband is going to become a beekeeper this year having finished the course. He gets his bees in April so Id like to grow suitable flowers and veggies for them. If anyone has any donations please get in touch.

What sort of habitat do you have in place NOW to support bees? Planting a few flowers and vegetables won't contribute much to their food source, as I am sure you know. Or, he will know.

So, what the interest in bee keeping? I am seriously curious.

The Gardenweb isn't the right place to ask for "contributions". But there are Exchange forums.

Plants will provide more color and interest as they mature. Right now they are thin and small. Hard to distinguish from the mulch. Easy fix is to use black mulch in bed the next time you need mulch. It will add a contrast. I am fond of stones and rocks in flower beds as they are natural accents. I use monkey grass as an edging Ajuga is a nice ground cover to use especially in spring when it flowers. Blue flowers. Bees frequent it so I don't know if that is a problem. Pretty combination is to have yellow Stella d'oros with the red knock out roses. For color now annuals are the way to go. Geraniums or begonias planted three in a group would work. I go toplant department and see what is available that has the best showy color.

To keep rabbits out of a garden you have to fence it - with fencing in an "L" shape so that they can't dig under it without hitting more wire. Most burrowing animals will get up to the fence and then try to dig under so by extending the wire out on the ground where they are most likely to start digging you prevent that. In the country, I'd include use of a rifle/pellet gun, but it sounds like you're in the city so I won't recommend it.

I love quiet lonely places for my meditation moments and also to reflect on many issues and as i look at other homes I image alot of things like how the world from a distance looks so lovely and peaceful and yet when you get to close it is most like the opposite. i am a Godly person so it helps me appreciate the creator.

Dianthus, super cute cute cute little blooms, doesn't seem to like our yard but they're adorable. Ohhhh you can have hostas! Well shoot, depending on your sun situation, what side of the house you put them on...we are about drowning in hostas at our place b/c we adore them like none other. They like mostly shade tho, but some of ours get sun during part of the day. Iris are nice. Russian Sage loves sun and is super duper easy to grow too. Plus it's pretty. We just put in a whole row of them along one side of our driveway, and a two rows along side the street of daylilies. The other side of the drive way is hosta's that they say are "sun" hostas..we'll see.

It is a valid question, if you are getting honey bees and want to make your yard a haven for them so you can enjoy them there are many flowers that will attract bees.

If the aim is not to provide the bees with a food source but to be able to watch them in action, single forms of flowers are best, the doubles don't always produce pollen.

Calendula and poppies come to mind they are easy to grow and beautiful. Sunflowers are a great fall flower for the bees, mine are always humming with bees.
