What sort of habitat do you have in place NOW to support bees? Planting a few flowers and vegetables won't contribute much to their food source, as I am sure you know. Or, he will know.

So, what the interest in bee keeping? I am seriously curious.

It is a valid question, if you are getting honey bees and want to make your yard a haven for them so you can enjoy them there are many flowers that will attract bees.

If the aim is not to provide the bees with a food source but to be able to watch them in action, single forms of flowers are best, the doubles don't always produce pollen.

Calendula and poppies come to mind they are easy to grow and beautiful. Sunflowers are a great fall flower for the bees, mine are always humming with bees.
