Blooming in the greenhouse

Our season always starts a bit early because of the daylilies we have in the greenhouse. Two are blooming today, but Bob couldn't get a picture of one of them. It's just too crowded and he risked knocking off the buds if he tried to move it. Here is Randall the Runner. Of course, pollinations started today too.

This isn't a daylily, but it's pretty so I thought I'd include it. It is Nidularium rutilans variegata.

Sansevierias don't bloom very often, but this variety called Fernwood is blooming in a south facing window. The blooms are open at night and it is fragrant.

I usually don't like eyed daylilies, but that huge smack of maroon in the middle with matching curtains (edge) is an eye full...........I'm a Sans fan myself. I've had to cut back by 2/3 all the Sans I had at one time. I have no greenhouse so they have to come inside the house over winter and there is very limited light here. I've got 2 Sans. Trifasciata Laurentia that are at least 25 years old that I have sitting in the kitchen bay window right now blocking traffic. They do great outdoors in our hot summers in semi-sun as accent plants. I believe yours is Sans. Cylindrica and you are right about the bloom. My Laurentia blooms not infrequently, but on it's own schedule. They say Cylindrica has a rather unique fragrance (in the evening usually). How do you find yours?...................This is a picture of my Sans Laurentia with Addie Branch Smith a few years ago..........

Beautiful Nancy! And looks like multiple blooms as well. How nice to have blooms to enjoy (and pollinate!!) this time of year. Thanks for sharing all of them.

Nancy, thank you for sharing! It’s great to see a daylily bloom today. I was out doing a bit of yard cleanup, it’s 51 degrees here today. My daylilies are confused, I’m seeing a bit of green all over the gardens. Early in the week it’s going to snow and be in the 20’s.

Maryl, the flowers were only open at night and the fragrance was pleasant and sweet but not overpowering. Unlike paperwhites that put out so much fragrance that you can smell them through the whole house, you could only smell the fragrance of the sansevieria when you got your nose close to it.

We were surprised that these came into bloom. We bought this one as a pot of what looked like small seedlings all clustered together. We divided them and sold some of them. I thought they would get much bigger before they bloomed.

Fragrance is a relative thing isn't it. I'm with you on Paperwhites............ I was just on the edge of getting Sans. Fernwood a few years back because they said it was a more compact form of Cylindrica, but I ran out of room even for that............. It's funny about Sans. I look at Hostas and think they mostly look alike while many look at the varieties of Sansevieria and think they mostly look alike. Why gardening is so much fun. So many different plants to get passionate about................. I thoroughly enjoy your greenhouse posts in the winter btw. Always something to see............Maryl

You are right about fragrance. I usually have a pretty good sniffer, but I can't smell daylilies even if I put my nose right in it. I can smell roses, lilac, viburnum on the air, but can't smell a daylily for the life of me. Bob is always says that such and such one is so fragrant and I can't tell it.

I have never had a greenhouse. I did have a lot of indoor plants, mostly orchids. The only thing I have now is a large pot of what I think is an epiphyllum, and an orange clivia. Keep threatening to get rid of them. I still enjoy the idea of so plants to have year round, but I tend to ignore them during the summer
