single stem? i am assuming you're referring to determinate tomato plants that don't continue sprawling new vines? or do you mean a tomato plant that you prune to only one vine?

Hi :) I am going to experiment this year with 11 varieties of tomatoes; all indeterminate. 2 of each variety: one let grow "as usual"/staking.........and one single stem.

In reading about single stem, will get less of a crop, but the crop will produce larger tomatoes.

Since I am trying with 11 varieties, ( 22 tomatoes in all ), quantity is not that material..........quality is.

(and there is only 2 of us at home)

generally yes, limiting to only 1 vine will yield less fruit, but perhaps slightly larger fruit.

i prefer letting the plants grow to whatever size the area i am growing can accommodate, including support system and prune if necessary. you will get much more tomatoes (by weight), even if they're a tad smaller.

Don't forget to add into the equation that you can plant the plants much closer together, so you can have many more plants in the same area. This will balance out the fact that each plant will have fewer fruit.

Also, I have found that three stems is optimum for me.

I use PVC pipe for cages. There's 4 uprights and I prune my plants so there's one to each upright.
