I would choose one of the countertops (either one) and put it on ALL the counters, including the island. You already have different colors between the perimeter and island cabinets and the floors, and the pattern in the countertops adds another element. You will also have some sort of texture/pattern in a back splash, even a very basic one. Keep it simple so it doesn't look so choppy.

Thank you for your input. The island has not yet been stained, would your recommend I choose a stain with less contrast or paint it instead?

Either TWO countertops and ONE cabinet color, or TWO cabinet colors and ONE countertop.

Which way you go really depends on you. Remember that the flooring, backsplash, lighting, etc all add to the business of a kitchen as well. Also with marble are you okay with staining, etching, and patina? You also mention off white cabinets. It's really hard to judge whether the white and grey marble goes without seeing the color.

Sina Sadeddin Architectural Design - thanks for your input. Would prefer not to have etching and staining but hoping with a honed finished etching will be minimized and sealer will prevent staining. Unfortunately, I'm having trouble finding an alternative that would look nice. It seems a veining type pattern would be most attractive and haven't seen a granite that seems right - River white and the quartzites look too grey for my vision. Maybe soapstone all around? will try to post the white later.

Soapstone is very dark, and a completely different look to the other countertops you're considering. It would also be a high contrast to the cabinets, adding yet another busy element. You can keep the white perimeter cabinets, and the stained island, but just use one countertop. There are many quartz products that are white rather than gray. Are you looking at the pieces in person with samples of your cabinets? That is how you need to choose, rather than looking on a computer. Marble will etch and stain regardless of how careful you are with it. Don't use it unless you want to live with that.

I wondered if you had chosen the Montclair Danby Marble? I am torn between the Carrara, which I think is pretty but boring and the more dramatic Montclair. We are preparing the home for resale (CA) in the next year and I think the Danby is a bit more dramatic and seems (according to Houzz participants) to hold up a bit better.
