The babies better nap good today. I‘m gonna need to be on my phone! I think this is my favorite category of all forums. The roses and perennials are all wonderful too but there is something about a well grown giant hosta that brings me peace.

I bought a Blue Angel based on the seller saying his experience was it was the largest blue Hosta in the Atlanta area. So I bought it and it took a few years but it truly is a giant.

Empress Wu has really impressed me despite my aversion to green hostas.

A smaller Empress Wu with two out of three Earth Angels around it.

I am a huge fan of the very large/giants, don't think I'll ever have enough of them! They are gloriously peaceful and always rewarding to visit, when they're happy. But sometimes I have planted them too close to one another, so that when they start to reach maturity they overlap and the wonderful forms get a little obscured. What do you all do when that happens? Dig up whole clumps and re-site them? Just leave them? (Do a better job of planning in the future? - my personal weakness - )

I'm thinking this is the year to do a lot of moving around. I planted based on expectations due to the size of the leaves in the pots when I got the plants. Mistake... Plus, some areas that were once more sunny are now more shady due to trees growing up, so they need redesign anyway, and I could move some of my lovelies over there. My goal would be to do this *without* dividing; I want that mature, or almost mature, look to return as soon as possible.

Just wondering how you all handle this. How close to the eyes do you dare cut - how much do you dare trim the root system, in early spring - and still get good performance?

Northern Gardener..it's hard work but it's possible..tie up the leaves if it's leafed out..use a garden fork..over and over and over!!..going around the root ball until eventually the hosta's free to move..drag it on a tarp to the new location if you can't lift it into a wagon..these Krossa Regal were "free if you dig" that we rescued last year..this is the first season after the move..I see purple pips..I'm excited to see them fresh and new..
