Pool Filter, Pump and Pipe Sizing Question?

Hi all,

I have limited space and I am looking to build an in ground pool with the dimensions of 11’x20’x7’ with an attached 11’x6’x42” hot tub. What it’s the appropriate size filter, pump and piping needed for this set up? Also, any recommendations on brands? Thanks so much for your all your help!!

    You need to determine the total volume and factor and 8 hour turnover rate.

    Let's just say this combo is 10,000 gallons total.

    An 8 hour rate is 1260 gallons per hour. You would need a pump that can deliver about 20 GPM.


    Generally a singe speed pump smaller than 1 HP is fine. But, by next July 2021, the Department of Energy will implement requirements for variable speed motors for all swimming pools. The idea is to reduce energy consumption. They are worth it. Besides at some point single speed motors will no longer be available when supplies houses stock dries up.

    The other benefit to a variable speed is it can run 24 hours a day and cost less than running your standard pump on a timed sequence. Plus, the pool is continuously filtering and getting sanitized.


    As far filtration is concerned, we install the largest residential filter on all out residential pools or stand alone spas. In this case, in my opinion, bigger is better. Diatomaceous earth (DE) can trap very small particles. It does however require some maintenance. A multi-cartridge is great and is easy to clean and keeps the water crystal clear. A traditional sand filter using glass media, does a nice job. The large tanks do need a large footprint for space.


    I am Jandy dealer and have been for more than 30 years so I am partial to their products.


    In regards to pipe size, on a "typical" backyard pool, we will use 2.5" rigid PVC for the surface skimmers, 3" for a strip drain, or some contractors still prefer floor drains, and generally 2" for the returns.

    With larger pipe, the pump requires less effort to move water with low resistance. This translates into less energy consumption.


    For the spa jets, 10 GPM for each jet should be the target. So 10 jets would require a flow rate of 100 GPM from a pump. Generally 3" PVC is fine for this set up. Sometimes 4" depending on the distance and turns. Longer distances from the pool to equipment will have an effect on pipe choice size and pump matching.

    A good contractor will calculate the total dynamic head of your pool/spa, to allow for the proper choice of pump and pipe size. Yup, lots of math there. It is important though.
