What is the table made of? Do you have a photo?

Wow that is very shiny! If you'd be willing to do so, you could sand it down a bit just to get the shiny finish off and coat it in a matte finish polycrylic. I've used minwax clear matte polycrylic in the past and it's great at protecting the wood as well.

Thanks. It is awful to be honest and currently covered by a tablecloth. I am definitely willing to sand it. What would you use to sand it down? I did read a few articles mentioning steel wool?

Not sandpaper - that will make a mess you won't be able to fix, use Steel Wool. Get # 000 grade and # 0000 grade. Start in an unobtrusive area in case you don't like it. Begin with the # 000 grade and go evenly, don't scrub but apply even pressure with the grain - very important. The # 000 will be the cut down, the # 0000 grade follows afterwards and smooths it out. If the steel wool starts "digging" into the finish, then stop,. that means a poly coating that is too soft. i have done this to hundreds of lacquer tables over the years. Are you sure this is a lacquer finish and not poly? It lays up like poly from the photos.

Again, practice on an inside leg area first, don't dive into the top itself. No circles and no cross grain wooling. Don't rush, be patient and if your arms get tired walk away and come back to it another day. It will work if lacquer and may work on some polys. Good luck.

If you spent allot on the table, this is a job for a pro finisher. I would first keep trying with the company who built it to recoat in a lower sheen. If they keep refusing, bite the bullet and get someone else.
