In Consumer Reports testing, none of the recommended HE top-loaders earned about a "good" rating in gentleness. The Whirlpool WTW8500DW was rated "very good" in gentleness but was not a recommended washer though HD owners like it. CR did recommend some front-loaders that it also rated above "good" in gentleness. Overall, agitator washers did not do well in CR's testing and the GE GTW845CSNWS mentioned above was not a recommended model and received only a score of "fair" in gentleness. http://www.consumerreports.org/join ($10/month digital).

I have a SQ analog model from 2017. Its capacity is exceptional-but can only be used to full advantage by using the reset setting of the water level. The default setting at Extra Large is too low. It can be adjusted if you are handy with mechanics however. Still, I would rather contend with that than the HE machines for my purposes.

As of 2018, Consumer Reports had about 6 million paying members. It is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and one can review its financial statements and other documents on its website. It's minimum subscription cost if $10/month(digital).
