Decorating Opinions

Are you really good with color and texture? I had the drapes custom made, (Fabric swatch is a close up). I'd like to use the wallpaper on the back wall. Im worried about the two different patterns or is it safe because the color is in the drapes? While we're at it, the light fixture is not staying, my other dilemma is, I am putting a grandfather clock in one of the corners of this room. It has gold weights and pendulum. I bought the bowls on the side table to tie in the gold. I was thinking of a black lighting fixture (to match the rest of the house). Is it good enough to just splash some gold in other rooms to tie that in?

First clocks do not belong in entertaining spaces and grandfather clocks have the annoying habit of chiming to really remind your guests of the time passing so put that in a hallway where they really belong.I don’t have a problem with the wallpaper and the drapes but I do have an issue with the very formal chairs and the farm table and the wallpaper. IMO the gold can be brought in with the light fixture since you are getting a new one but the bowls are really too small for the console. I would decide on the light fixture and then worry about the decor on the console.

Patricia, thank you. Unfortunately, I dont have another place for the Grandfather clock, but I can turn off the chimes. Interesting, I didnt think the chairs were formal at all, I bought them at Pier 1. You think the wall paper is too formal for the table?

I think all of your ideas will work well. I like that wallpaper, it’s got a nice, subtle design. You can pair nearly anything with it. And grasscloth is a great choice with your other elements and the style of the room.

Your chairs are perfectly fine with that table, they are absolutely not too formal ... and if you want a clock, have a clock. Clocks make Patricia very anxious. ;) You honestly don’t have to worry about the gold in the clock matching anything else.

I’m not a fan of those bowls, I don’t think they fit the aesthetic of the room, but it’s hard to say without the rest of the decor in. I just think pretty pottery, baskets for texture, lamps, etc would look perfect.

A black light fixture would look good in there, yes.

Not a pro, but I love the contrast, mix and match, between your chairs and table. Lovely room, will be nice to see pictures when it's finished!

Please DO put your grandfather clock in the corner (and let it chime) as that will be a lovely traditional touch, very much along the lines of what I have observed in several wonderful English country manor houses. You have a very good eye and I too look forward to seeing how you complete the space.

I really like the fabric with the wall paper!

Very pretty room...can’t wait to see when it’s finished :)

The room overall looks pretty but I agree with Patricia. I see a tension between formal vs. farmhouse. The chairs are traditional but the light legs match the table. The console is a similar traditional farmhouse. The chandelier is sophisticated transitional/contemporary. Adding wallpaper and a grandfather clock make me think you prefer a formal, sophisticated style.

I would figure this out first before any major changes like the wallpaper or chandelier.

Farmhouse? Put some large scale rustic wall art above the console. Use a more rustic chandelier. Accessorize with pops of teal, a basket or 2, or rustic bowls, candleholders, etc.

Formal? Traditional? Find a solid tablecloth--teal?--to cover the farmhouse table. Leave the chandelier and accessorize with more bling. I'm 50/50 on the clock. I would not do the wallpaper if you are keeping the drapes. Maybe a large scale mirror on that wall? I am also concerned it may get crowded.

Keep us posted! It is beautiful, just a few finishing touches.

Your room is beautiful with the colors and furniture working so well together. I will give another vote for adding your grandfather clock to the room. Lucky you to hear those chimes,

I do love the fabric and colors in your drapes; I also love your beautiful chairs but I also have a little problem with using those elegant chairs with a farm house style table. My grandfather clock is in my dining room too because it's the only spot it will work! We are used to the chiming and no one has any problem with the chimes when dining with us. Your table decor is more farm house as well and only goes with the table. I would suggest getting a new table or buying chairs that will go with the table. I love elegance and comfy chairs when I eat and I decorated my dining room with those thoughts and colors in mind. Good luck!

I’d love to see an example of chairs from everyone who thinks these chairs are too formal. I don’t mean that snarky at all .... I’m genuinely curious what you think would go better? I think they’re perfect.

Here is what I was thinking of when I saw the table:

I hope these help! Luckily for me, our dining room table came with 6 chairs. I also have 6 additional upholstered chairs for when we have extra guests that go with my decorating theme (traditional).

Looks like the thread is on chairs. I have seen this look before on Fixer Upper with elegant upholstered chairs and a farm table. Linda, I would not buy new furniture. The furniture you have can adapt with accessories.

Just curious-- what does the clock look like?

I love the way the current table and chairs contrast yet complement. I absolutely would not replace any of the furniture. It all works nicely together. Besides, eclectic is a most interesting look.

I think its a lovely refined look. I like eclectic and if I had my choices I probably would have gone with different chairs, but those still look lovely and comfy too. I wouldn't change the clock either. I can see the reasoning behind changing it but I don't think it would be an issue. At least it wouldn't be for me. Good job, its lovely.

Thank you everyone. I'm not sure how the post changed to my chairs. They are not in question. I bought the table, it was a bit more rustic than I anticipated (bought it online) and bought the chairs to balance it out. I am absolutely not changing brand new furniture. Lol. As for the wall paper, I think I'll keep looking. This one is a bit pricey. I'll update once it's done, clock and all.

It tends to happen here often when someone asks about a specific element in a room and others respond by pointing out completely different elements that they would change. I believe they think this is helpful, but it can come across as hypercritical and disrespectful IMO. Most of us have neither the desire nor the financial wherewithal (particularly in our current climate!) to start replacing furniture. I personally wish posters would refrain from the unsolicited advice.

I do like your wallpaper choice, but understand the desire to keep looking. And since your room is already so lovely, you need not feel rushed to make a decision.

I like the juxtaposition of the styles! The wallpaper looks like it could work, and I think it blends well with what I can see of the rest of the house. Those gold bowls are the outlier for me...I would return if possible. Add a large, square item of art over the buffet, with turquoise, gold, and the wallpaper colors as part of the scheme. I wouldn't worry so much about tying in the gold...

Thank you all, i guess I should have said, this is a brand new house with mostly brand new furniture and drapes. I am trying to sprinkle in some of my older pieces, (the clock). I like the chairs with that table and purchased them specifically for the table. I realized in the picture they look velvet or velour, they are actually cotton twill which to me leans more casual, but they can also go the other way with different decor. The lighting fixture is the builder grade fixture which doesnt fit my style at all. We haven't moved in yet, we are still back and forth between states, so when I finally get in, i will update with whatever I decided to do. Im sure some will hate it, lol others will love it. Thank you all for your opinions. We all definitely have different styles :)

I am a lover of wallpaper....but I don’t think I would use this particular one. It is so neutral and provides an element of texture through movement but think for the expense I would opt for more of a wow factor. It you are set on using paper I would look for something with more color or design. The color is the same as your table but design style clashes. Is this to be used on an accent wall or through your dining room? Your drapery fabric is lovely. Nice color pallet. Have you considered introducing another color on table or buffet? A bright yellow or lime green would work well..so would white. It is okay to mix metal finishes. I would not worry about matching grandfather clock pendulum to metals elsewhere. Please post your finished room. Cant wait to see.

I really like what you have. All of it but no wallpaper. I would get art and plants and bring in some greens and call it a day. :)

I think the chairs are OK with your table. I agree a cotton twill fabric does not scream formal. The area looks crowded with 8 chairs. Can you remove the head chairs & bring them out for the times they are needed? You invested in 2 rustic looking furniture pieces so I'm assuming you like that look. Love the fabric & think the abstract pattern adds to downplaying the rustic. I adore wallpaper & think that back wall would look great with it but I think something more lively than the wallpaper you post is in order. Take your time & locate just the right one. Not sure how you purchased your curtains. Often wallpapers have corresponding fabric choices & vice versa. If you do wallpaper, you'd be adding color to the room plus won't have to worry about art for that back wall. Right now all you have are creams & teals. If you decide NOT to wallpaper, I think you can search for a more colorful rug. Agree about purchasing a light fixture with the rustic/glam look. I don't like the line-up of those table candles. Group them in a more rounded way. Those gold bowls are OK but too small for the expanse of that console. Decor comes in time. I'd decide first on either wallpaper or art for the back wall vs a more colorful rug. Then choose decor. Bring in some of those greens from the curtain fabric.

Theresa, its funny, i originally started looking for grasscloth and along the line thought maybe it was going too casual. I may start looking at that again. AS has a good point. I dont have my plants in the house yet. I think maybe I will wait until we actually move in and see how things fall in to place. We have done a lot before actually moving in, it might be time to live in the house a little bit first to get a feel for what it needs. :)

grasscloth with all your plants added would look great together...totally agree that living in it a while could change what you want... looks great so far!!! love the colors in the curtains and the style of them. are you still thinking about a new chandelier?

I love that Waverly teal, the light one. I'm going to look into it myself now.

    gotta love grasscloth!

When you say you haven't moved into the house yet, what did you mean? (Have we been decorating your old house or your new one?)

Drblount. We built a new house (the one pictured) closed on it but haven’t moved in to it yet. We are moving in June.

Ok just checking...had me concerned for a sec...

I normally avoid wall paper but I am feeling Theresa's choices in the light grasscloth. I think it might look better though if you paper it all, because the current walls are grey. Or paint the room to match the color of the grasscloth.

Note: this look is farmhouse. Is this where you are leaning?

I like when things are mixed, and I don't think things *always* have to be x+y+z. Your room doesn't look half assed or thrown together. It's very pretty and inviting-suppers there would be cozy I think.

Well, I am saying ixnay on the allpaper-way.

Unless you are old-old and once you decorate this room you will never change anything.

    Then go right ahead.

    Otherwise...

Do I need to tell you that when you put in a nail to hang something you will make a hole in the paper, so if you decide to change around your artwork, etc you will now have holes in your wallpaper on view in perpetuity?

Do I need to tell you that fabric fades, and when your lovely dining room curtains fade in 10 years you will most certainly buy another lovely pair and you shouldn't be restricted to a pair that matches the wall paper you already have up?

Do I need to tell you that taking down wallpaper is not for the faint of heart or the arthritic of shoulder or back?

Confused. You built a house tie one pictured. But your furniture is in already?

AS yes we have been going back and forth since sept. Bought almost all new furniture.

loonab there are many new Wallpapers now. Peel and stick removes easily. But honestly if I am changing drapes in 10'years, I am changing wallpaper too.

I like the idea of the grasscloth too. Is this dining space open to anything else other than the entryway?

GCubed, a launch area, butlers pantry area and pantry. (not really) I think the grasscloth is a good choice, it will go with the decor of the rest of the house and the office which is right across from the DR has drapes the same color grasscloth I would most likely do in the DR. It would be a nice flow. :)

Wow, I didn't know wallpaper was that easy to remove now.

I removed wallpaper from a house that had been sitting on the walls for 40 years and omg, was that ever hard work!

I vowed to never go near the stuff again.

Hello Linda, hope you and the family are well. Any updates on the dining room?

Unfortunately no, with the shut down, haven't been able to go out and find the right wall paper. I requested a few samples online but haven't found the right one yet.

Glad to hear you are well and settling in. Have you made any other changes? If not, no worries. The Corona situation does put things into perspective. Praying for your continued health, and keep us posted.

Drblount we did a lot of landscaping outside because that's is what we can do now. (12 trees and a bunch of shrubs ). Lol. Next is putting in some closet systems and more landscaping. :).
