I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the rug but agree with the pros that there are just too many colors going on here...plus the texture of the wall to wall carpeting, plus the bookcases with all the colors of the book spines, plus all the little knick knacks & small decor items, plus the fireplace brick, plus the art work, plus you can see into the NEXT room with yet another lively rug & lots of small items on that console. I myself am into mixing colors & patterns but I find your room to be too much. I think you need to neutralize it via decluttering, wall paint, neutral pillows. Agree to a round coffee table in glass. Maybe you can find an end table in cherry to compliment the cherry book shelves. A FEW green items (pottery, art work, vases) to carry through the green of the rug. Neutral lamps.

I love your rug (I have the same one in blue : ) I bought a big glass coffee table and I think it works very well. It is tempered glass and really sturdy. I wouldn't have a coffee table that I couldn't put my feet up on, plus it doesn't cover up the rug!

    Love it!!!!!

You two (and the ad I’m getting) are making me want this rug. Is this some kind of conspiracy?!

    😂

Seriously, I really like them. Do I need a new rug? Of course not. But still ....

The books totally bring life to the space. They're like happy little friends, just beckoning you over to read their spines and choose among them.

Just for fun here is the wall of mismatched furniture and wood tones opposite the fireplace, aka my art studio. none of the artwork on the wall is mine. Mostly my kids’. I’d like to paint one or two of these pieces of furniture.

    It’s pretty awful!

what are you talking about? not awful at all. it's all very personal and that's what makes it you and your family. we are so hard on ourselves and we shouldnt be. love your style by the way and love everything about your room. our homes should be a reflection of the family that lives there and I think yours is absolutely that!!!

Playing with Redesigning wall opposite fireplace wall. Put SW Dark Night on walls. Put magnetic steel board up for displaying art pieces. I found plug in wall sconces up for additional lighting without using desk top space. Put little easel and paint brush container. I think your furniture will look gorgeous with this wall painted!

I swapped location of y’all curio because that balances closet doors and looks more “built-in” and organized. I added white orchid. When entertaining I would clear off desktop and leave only a few pieces. You could even place finger foods on tray for quick bites for guests. Hope this gets your artistic juices flowing!! 😉

Here are the plug in lights. Great deal. I know you need more light over there. Also a few examples of magnetic boards.

Hello 3x5. I like the office too, the woods do go together even if they don't "match."

I also was unaware your walls are olive green. The looked golden beige on my phone which is what I like. It gives a nod to the gold chairs and the beige mantle. Would you consider a beige or champagne color for the walls?

If you are still loving the green, make sure you get paint samples on canvases or cardboard that you can move around the room at different times of the day, to check the light. You can also make sure it will go well with your furniture. Maybe match the green in the rug and go a shade or 2 darker?

Yeah I am okay with beige if the green doesn’t pan out! Definitely trying samples before going that bold on the wall! Thank you for the great suggestions!!!

Well I guess I'll throw in my two cent, as well. I very much like Beverly's first round glass coffee table in your room. I also really like your fireplace exactly as it is but would edit the items on your hearth. Your pillows look like a forced attempt to bring your accent colors into your room. I'd get rid of all of them and replace them with some patterned pillows containing some orange and possibly the cream or green in the rug. Maybe you could find a great fabric for both pillows and new drapes - your old ones are nice but don't really tie into your color scheme. You could also use more black in the room, apart from the cutie dogs.

    Getting there Flo!!!

I worked on my mantle decor a little and moved pillows to the hearth.

I do have a lightbulb out. Haha

I'd put the pillows back where you had them, as they work well on the furniture but don't look like they belong on the hearth.

Yeah after looking at them I agree!

Love your room. Taking Flo’s suggestion for the back wall really looks good! Do you mind sharing the source of that gorgeous sofa?

You go girl! Looking good! That one change really improves that area. A creamy vase and some white in the curio cabinet will brighten spot up too. No pillows on hearth. Less is more.

mickee sadly we got it at a thrift store!!! It’s old! Haha! AllModern and Wayfair have some similar sofas

You didn't ask, but may I make a suggestion (& maybe other posters could voice their thoughts)? Your pictures on either side of the fireplace might look better if they were switched. Not sure, but you might try it. :-)

    Nice rug choice!

What if you replace the sofa with something without a skirt? I think that will help the space feel more open.

Here are a couple of options for tables and a sofa.

Got my artwork framed and hanging up. I am thinking of hanging something above the orange paibring, like an oversized clock of something. Thoughts?

I think this looks great! Nothing else is needed on the walls. Your eyes need space to rest, and your current arrangement provides that quite nicely.

Love that rug! And kudos to you for using lots of color! Go with a simple glass or acrylic coffee table that won't take up a lot of visual space in the room. You have some big furniture pieces in there, and that's fine. But don't add to the volume, if you will.

Find something like this, in the correct proportions:

I disagree with suggestions of a glass coffee table in this particular room. A wood one (in the right shape, level of simplicity, and proportions) would look more calm and integrated here with your wonderful colors, styles, patterns, and especially textures. A break in visual stimulation. I think a glass one would actually give off a busier vibe (vibrant rug showing underneath, for example), while also looking a bit lost. As much as I love glass tables, they aren’t always the best choice in a room. And I absolutely wouldn’t do acrylic ... again, I like them ... not here. It would be adding another style and aesthetic to just the right amount you already have.

I had a glass coffee table when my DD was little and ended up selling it to get a wood table. It wasn’t a sturdiness issue, it was a Windexing toddler prints every 20 minutes issue. 😄

Your latest pic looks great and I agree with Ida. I wouldn’t add to the wall.

(Wanted to clarify that I really like tlbb’s glass table. It works well in that room, which is a very different room than this one.)

What about wall color for this wall? I think the current color is working, but I just really hate it and want to change it!!!

Are you wanting to go lighter with paint? If so, I’d try a big sample of your off-white, like you mentioned earlier. I really like your current color, but I’m not the one living there. Do what makes you happy. :)

There are also quite a few colors you could pull out of the brick fireplace.

ETA: Love this coffee table. Exactly the simplicity I was talking about.

You don’t need anything else on walls. Or fireplace wall. If you can’t stand current wall color then perfect time to pick what you love. Do you want to get lighter? Or cozier?

    threebyfivebt thanked Flo Mangan

    Cozier would be great!

How about an oval coffee table to go with your sofa curve?

Here are colors in your space.

Have you considered centering your sofa on the fireplace and then flanking your swivel chairs on either side. I put a few items in your room just for fun. Not necessarily suggesting these specific pieces but I did enjoy yellow in your room...

    Hello threebyfivebt, any updates?

@drblount10 No paint or coffee table...salary cut due to COVID. Still rearranging and trying to figure it out!!!

Hey, I can definitely relate to that. Have you been able to pandemic unemployment in your state? Still looks nice in there, are you liking the new arrangements?

Such a fun space! The darn Covid..stopped us all in our tracks!

Have you tried chairs flanking fireplace with sofa facing fireplace...that sofa is just fabulous... that color!! I would add more of that rich burnt orange into the room....do walls all in a off white something light and neutral maybe pull a neutral from your brick fireplace..add neutral Pillows with some textured print/pattern Pillows into the mix....not solids.

a metal and wood table will ground the room something with a vintage style..
