Rescued two Daphnes !!

For time being that is.
See they have a knack of dying and these two might just do the same.

I found them on clearance at third of the regular price. Sickly looking and sure to go to bin if no one picked them.
I suspect some newbie just overwatered the whole lot and the whole rack of these was a sorry mess of drooping yellow leaves.

So bought two (what else you expect) and left them in shade to dry out for a whole week in part shade. No water.

Next step was to make some 511 mix and that too on fast side. Hot dry summers and wet winters mean that sensitive plants like Daphne, Michelia Alba all go into 511 mix in my garden.

And this was first time I succeeded in bare rooting the plants real well. I think the trick is to let the soil be dry and crumbly.

Daphne being Daphne might just die coz of the root disturbance. But then the roots were not doing great in first place. Lower bottom half was just a rotten brown mess and fell apart in hands.

Here are the two amigos. One is still not happy.

They will spend a week in dappled shade.

511 mix looks beautiful when made. This one has small as well as big size perlite. And a sprinkle of controlled release fertilizer on top. Being at start of winter I am not hoping for growth. Just the survival is whole job done.

Will post pics a week later.
