The mantel looks great! I would remove the mesh screens and look into installing simple glass doors.

Thank you for this.... do you know if you can simply remove the mesh screen(s) and install glass doors, or is something I need a fireplace company to come out and perform? (I am hoping for a DIY solution)

Your screen is probably attached to a frame. You may be able to remove the screen by removing the fasteners (nuts). Look from the “inside”

Take a look at the offerings at Lowes and Home Depot. I think the photo I posted is from HD and there may be further info on product installation there.

It sounds as if you are up to a (dirty) challenge. You can replace just the screen. Google “how to replace fireplace screen” . Easy enough to do, just messy.

Maybe the mesh in a gold or brass finish will look a little prettier and sort of stop the eye from the sort of dark,dull interior

I used to have these wire mesh curtains on a fireplace and hated them. They were hard to slide back and forth. The mesh itself was always dark and ashy. They tend to hang unevenly. I got rid of them and got glass doors. Glass doors do require a good deal of cleaning but function smoothly and offer a nice view of the flames.

Wondering what you decided to do with your screen. Glass doors are a great idea, but none of the doors sold at home depot or Lowes are safe to use on a prefab fireplace like yours. They can cause the fireplace to overheat and create a potential fire hazard. There are fireplace doors made specifically for prefab fireplaces that allow proper airflow to prevent overheating.
