Smoothie peeps - q 4 u

So I used to use a mini Braun for smoothies, then switched to a Nutribullet. It needs a replacement gasket (after only a yr) which kind of pizzes me off. We ordered one and it didn't fit. Meantime, one of our princesses has claimed my smoothies "taste metallic." We all like smoothies a lot but this one, err, consumer, is displeased. Let's assume she is correct; could it be the machine? WDYT of Vitamix?

We love our Vitamix and are on our second only because we upgraded to a larger size. It also gets used almost daily and we have had it for several years.

Are your smoothies milk/yogurt based, or just juice-based? If it’s juice, then I can heartily recommend the Brevelle juicer. I’ve had mine for about 10 years and it still works perfectly. We’ve been using it daily for the past couple of months. We go in cycles. I haven’t had to replace any parts and there’s no off taste (unless I use beets, lol)

Looks like Pondwater, but taste delicious.

We make at least 2 smoothies per day and often more. Now that my youngest is vegan, I also use it to make sauces, fake cheeses, etc.

We went through several cheaper blenders until I decided to splurge on a Vitamix. We just got our second one so we can have one at the lake. That's how much we like it. I've also heard good things about Blendtec.

Our second Vitamix, is the shorter, wider version so that it fits better under our cabs and is easier to scrape out when I make a small batch of sauce, etc. We kept the shorter one here and took the taller one to the lake where it is mostly for smoothies and our cabs are mounted higher. My only complaint is it is hard to scrape it clean to get every little bit when making those small batches.

I have my mother's c. 1984 Vitamix. We use it a good deal, though not a big smoothie household. Lots of almond grinding for frangipane, though. I realize lots of old machines are better than their new counterparts (see Cuisinarts from he 80s vs today.) I don't think that's the case with Vitamix.

I am loathe to buy more appliances, esp a big and costly one, and I like the nutribullet. Id hate to buy a Vitamix and still get the metallic complaint. I thought it might be the machine?

Maybe try removing one different ingredient each time you make them for the next while and see if she always discerns a metallic taste or if it is caused by one ingredient. For me - too much lemon zest in anything tastes metallic, but others don'e think so. I would think if it was the machine (which I have never found with our Nutribullet) that the whole family would taste it.

Does anyone else think it tastes metallic or just your one daughter?

Another fan of Vitamix here. You could order it from Costco to try it, and if you don't care for it, they will take it back. I bought my first one about 10 years ago, and have subsequently bought two more, for both my sons. The motor is so powerful that it will literally cook soup. There are you tube videos comparing Vitamix and Blendtec, and you might find those informative. Be forewarned however if you like frozen Margaritas, because you'll be making them at home. (Most bars use the Vitamix, it's enclosed in a plastic cover the shield the sound.)

Has daughter had pine nuts lately? If so, investigate "pine mouth", the only subject where the internet actually assured me I was NOT insane instead of the other way around.

How are her sinuses? Things taste metallic to me when they are flaring up.

Is anything else tasting metallic to her? Does she ever notice the taste when not eating or drinking, that her mouth just tastes metallic? Have you changed whole house water filter recently or Britta filter? Does she take Advil with any regular for arched or something else?

Nope, just my smoothies. I think I will try a batch and see if she still tastes it, and I will ask everyone else to taste it to. I almost wonder if she is smelling the motor and confusing it with taste? She is kind of my princess-and-the-pea kid. I would ignore it but she loves smoothies.

    Thanks everyone!

PS no meds and no pine nuts either.

Mtn, I have a prince and the pea kid, totally get it.

just a quick thought, could it be old ice in the ice machine? It can get that old freezer burn taste if it sits a bit longer than usual (winter?)

Can't speak for VitaMix, but DD2 has one and likes. We use a Wolf Pro Performance Blender

Smiling, we usually use frozen fruit and no ice, but good idea!

I love my Nutribullet and have been using them for years. They don't have a long life, though, in comparison to the super expensive blenders/juicers. It might be used twice a day (or more) for packed greens and fruit "sludgies".

I have never noticed a metallic taste and I'm extreeeemly sensitive to things like that. My husband has also started making sludgies occasionally now that he is retired as are my young honorary granddaughters now at home (next door). No one has ever mentioned an off taste.

I use our old (very old) Oster blender. Works great.

We’ve had two nutribullets, mostly used by DD and me, and have never noticed a metallic taste. We had our first one for years and only had to replace it bc oldest DS kept ignoring the instructions to have a certain minimum amount of fluid in the mix. We’ve had NB #2 for several years now. Still works great.

I don't do smoothies any more but when I did, the vitamix worked very very well.

    A few things.

First, a friend mentioned to me that Vitamix sells reconditioned models that have a 3yr warranty and look new. I went to their website and saw they are having a sale. https://www.vitamix.com/us/en_us/

You can get Certified Reconditioned Explorian for just $199 (a savings of $90)... i think normally they are $500 for that model?

Second, did a Nutribullet taste test today at Linner. The machine does emit a faint machine-y odor, not unlike other small appliances IMHO. But all present agreed the smoothie itself did not taste of metal. When questioned further, the subject offered that it tasted "refrigeratory" but that was not conclusive.

I did look up their fave, the "Kale Storm" at Maine Squeeze, and noted that I always use yogurt and this has none. So we will try to replicate a Kale Storm. (which, btw, is delish). https://mainesqueezejuicecafe.com/portland-old-port/

I’ve had a couple of Nutribullets and never noticed a metallic taste. Recently upgraded to the larger version NutriBullet makes which is more like a Vitamix. Love it because it has a larger motor and larger container. I am sensitive to off taste and would definitely notice a metallic taste. I have been experimenting with some different protein powders and that can definitely affect taste as well as consistency.

When I get migraines things taste off to me; metallic and sometimes smokey excetera. My friend with temporal lobe epilepsy has the same problem. Since it never happens to her except for with the smoothies there is no concern for your DD that way. Still I thought that might help somebody else.

Thank you for posting about the sale. I'll see if at that applies here in BC Canada. I have been attempting to buy a Vitamix but had my heart set on a certain type. They no longer make that type though and I can't find anybody who sells it.

I have a Vitamix in L.A. that I use for smoothies and many other things, but here in Cathedral City, I have an Oster blender for 1/10 the cost that has smoothie and milkshake settings that do just as good a job as the Vitamix, and it is very easy to clean. For the smoothie and milkshake settings, the Oster goes through several different speeds, but it ends up crushing and blending the ice just as well as the Vitamix and does not require changing speeds the way the Vitamix does.

If you want something that will grind grain, then you should go with the Vitamix, but if you only want smoothies, milkshakes, and normal blender options (such as making mayonnaise), then you would be better off with an Oster.

Thank you for the info Mtn. So glad your DD is in good hands! Also that medications work on her. I hope her headaches disappear for good!

Very interesting that she has no identifiable triggers.

Has she been checked for TMJ syndrome or jaw or teeth clenching? Those cause headaches that turn into migraines for some. Also neck problems can lead to headaches as well. I know several people who are helped with botox for TMJ related problems.

My migraines vary in location on my head plus I get auras occasionally as well. I go blind for at least an hour then. I don't have nausea since I did my health nut regimen 14 years ago. I react so poorly to the medications my Dr took me off of everything except for Tylenol ultra. I take a half pill.

I am triggered by stress sugar alcohol white flour most bread too much salt most oils and MSG and big time by bright sunlight and barometric pressure. I have all the triggers just about. Which might be why my migraines haven't abated.

My sister's migraines disappeared when she hit puberty!!! Mine started in my early 20s and nothing worked even though I was diagnosed immediately. Maybe I was too old. I was told they would go away on their own. Then when they didn't I was told they would go away with menopause...nope and they're getting worse again. Haha joke was on me.

Yes a change in taste can be a sign of brain damage from migraines, epilepsy etc.

I read the title of this thread just now and thought “ who makes smoothies from Peeps?” I’ve been inside too long.

Yeonassky, sorry to hear about your migraines. That seems like a lot of triggers!

DD kept a pretty detailed diary on her phone, and nothing really suggested a trigger except hormonal changes, but those headaches were mild. Her Dr. eliminated TMJ as a trigger.

Personally, I suspect lack of sleep. Her demographic is notorious for that, especially in her environment. It may be hard to identify as a trigger since she has so few well-rested data points. Anyway, her goals is end the medication but for now I am just so thankful.

PS Her neurologist has a heavy Russian accent and is hard to understand sometimes. She had a call with her the other day and the Dr. said just keep trying to avoid triggers, and my DD misheard "avoid sugars" and looked alarmed. LOL

PPS I forgot to comment about neck strain. She didn't notice any neck discomfort, and she has exceptionally good posture as a musician so the Dr. and I didn't think that was the issue ... but we got her a special pillow and massage therapy anyway. She was one pampered thoroughbred while we were trying to ID triggers, that's for sure!
